In some areas, rail travel is coming back. Last year, they started to run trains to Lynchburg. So far, the riding numbers are far beyond what they ever expected. We are now pushing to have the train come just a little further west to Roanoke. I know it too will exceed the numbers. People here want rail. This is a rail town. The two engines above were designed and built less than a half a mile from where they are sitting (right outside my office!). We ARE rail here and would love to ride to D.C. by rail. Time will tell. We have some great books available on our website (www.vmt.org) too from our brand new online store. I got many gray hairs over that episode! These engines are true beauties and were all built in the days of drawings and sliderules. They could run around the clock and could hit speeds of 120 mph. Amazing that something that weighs that much could ever get moving that fast! The 611 and tender are just under a million pounds. Runner-up to my mother-in-law!! Glad you like them too. They were and still very much are, an important part of our country's history. Don

Don, I envy you the fact that you can wander out the back and be surrounded by such machinery. Wonderful stuff, mate. Bruce

WoW!!! Amazing - it looks grand!!! Bruce is right, you are lucky, Don - to be able to just walk right out and take a coffee break next to these beautiful pieces of history!! Regarding train travel coming back - I'm all for it!! We need the slow trains and the fast 300 mph trains (China just tested one and the Japanese ran one at 361 mph in 2003)! We needed them yesterday - hopefully they'll be here tomorrow - then we can junk half the automobiles and a lot of old smelly aeroplanes. A nice transportation mix/choice is what's needed and train travel will fill a gap that's been missing in this country for a long time in getting from one place to another. Plus, they say they have food - onboard no-less ( the thought of such a thing : news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101203/ap_on_hi_te/as_china_high_speed_railThanks for the video's Vin - enjoyed viewing! Dan …it’s great being a kid again – without the glue! ;D
