A while back I decided to do a new, clean install of FSX on a separate hard drive in my exisiting PC. I'd been running FSX with a 9800GTX+ graphics card in my exisiting XP installation which had become very cluttered with all sorts of other rubbish and stuff. I also thought that I'd treat myself to a brand new GTX560 card and upgrade to Windows 7 (32 bit only) at the same time.
I thought I'd see a reasonably good improvement in FSX performance, and I did - but only in my old XP set up! After trying every which way, I can't find any settings at all that allow me to run FSX in Windows 7 - yep, none at all. They are totally incompatible on my PC, an Intel Core 2 Quad 6600 with 4gB of RAM, which I find absolutely astonishing as the software all comes from the same source ie Microsoft. I also get the constant 'Nvidia driver stopped responding' problem that is being reported by people everywhere and which nobody seems capable of solving, and millions of people have paid good money in good faith for hardware and software that is just unusable. Check it out - even brand new off-the-shelf laptops and PCs running Windows 7 are affected by the problem, which I think is scandalous.
Anyway, that's enough from me on this old chestnut again, but I am beginning to think that the big PC hardware and software manufacturers are getting away with murder now in a way that would not be tolerated in something like motor vehicles other types of consumer goods.

Roger have you turned UAC off in Win7; if not I would? Also is this a fresh install of FsX or one previously in your pc on a different hd from the one your OS is? I'm sure between us all we can solve it.

FSX is not the only Microsoft software to have problems........MSTS also.

It's been a while since the last post in this thread but I was determined not to let this stuff get the better of me, and in the meantime I've had quite a few other priorities. My 'main' computer that I used to run FSX etc on died on me before I left England and since I came to France I've had rather a lot on my plate. Anyway, I took a chance before spending big money on a new mobo and cpu and just bought a new 900W psu to see if that would bring my old mobo back to life. I suspected that the new GTX560 that I'd just bought might have drained a bit more out of the old one than it could supply (and I was running Flight at the time it died) as despite installing the new GPU, my problems were all graphics related. And I was right. I also treated myself to a 2TBit Seagate SATA drive and for the past few days I've been experimenting with a new, clean install of Windows 7 on it. My aim is to try to move completely away from XP if I can because like many others, I'm getting constant Generic Host problems with it both on my PC and my laptop with many services being shut down (as both are doing it, am I wrong to suspect that a recent automatic update is responsible - answers on a postcard) making it very tedious every time I boot having to start them all up again by hand. It's a bit of a bummer because I know when I do, I'll lose some software like GameCam (used to make movies in FSX and FS9) because although I have a 'paid for' activation code, the software creator(s) refuse to re-issue it so you can reinstall the software when you upgrade - naughty, and a few other bits and pieces that I haven't checked yet to see if they run in compatibility mode. Anyway, enough of the background. When I first set up Win7 I got a windows experience rating of less than 5 with, amazingly, gaming graphics (yep, with a new GTX560...) being the culprit. And my FSX ran like a dog with constant flashing and loss of image, so I thought I was right back at square 1. However, I blindly tweaked a couple of items in my Nvidia Control Panel 3D settings and waddayaknow - the graphics rating shot up to 7.2! Never one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I have just run my FSX (which I've just taken to SP1 as I did in XP in which it ran pretty well) and lo and behold, it's running quite well and is stable at last (I hope anyway). It's a tad jerky but at least it looks as though I may now have a stable platform to work with. I've got other stuff to set up now so I'll have to come back to FSX later, but I thought I'd just let you guys know what I've been up to, so you know that I've not completely forsaken my flightsim after all. Far from it - I'm looking forward to getting right back into FS9 and FSX - and who knows, now that I'm retired I might even get back into some scenery development during those long, lonely winter evenings Roger

It appears that my celebrations were a bit premature and the champagne is back on ice. As usual, I enjoyed 1, maybe 2 flights in (an unmodified) FSX and then switched off and did other things. When I returned to continue where I'd left off, my graphics were once again shot to pieces - flashing terrain, parts of aircraft becoming transparent and/or disappearing, black screen even. Then on the final occasion it threw me out completely to the BSD and when I'd re-run my BIOS set up and restarted FSX, it told me that there was now a problem with activating the product! I've just tried to do a repair install and it tells me that there was a fatal error! So I' am actually back at square one - beyond actually as previously I didn't have it un-activate on me. BTW, everything else runs beautifully so far in my Win 7 - even my accounts prog that I couldn't get running before, is running nicely in compatibility mode. So where now? Any ideas anyone? Roger

Hmmm...Flashing is driver related at best....
I suggest to delete the config file for FSX...it will build another one...You can't drag a tweaked CFG into FSX...you have to rewrite the origional one always for best results...
Their is an FSX tweak to correct some of those problems...I think its LOD...I have forgotten...It starts at 40(default) I set it to 10...then try 60...70...80..90... 40 is just not good on FSX IMO...
I will soon install FSX and check...I have all tweaks here somewhere and I will search them out...I also had them all posted at SimOuthouse under FSX at the top ...

Not LOD... this
TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT........
also
TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=4096 (for 4096×4096 textures) TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=2048 (for 2048×2048 textures) TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=1024 (default value when global texture resolution is set to very high)
I have NEVER had to do more to any FSX Config other than the Texture Bandwidth tweak on any socket CPU...
Hope this helps..New DRIVER too...lol
