What GREAT Photo's!!!! Yes indeed.....that was the best time for aviation. Not like the cattle car experience of today.
What I'd give to have the magic back again!!!
Cheers,

The trouble with Golden Ages is that you never realise that you are living in one.

The trouble with Golden Ages is that you never realise that you are living in one. That should be on a desk calendar, Nige. Very pithy!

Only just spotted this - Great stuff. If you'd told people then that you'd have to take half your clothes and your shoes off before being allowed anywhere near an aircraft and that not only would the flight deck not be accessible but it'd be armour plated and protected like Fort Knox, they'd never have believed you.

Only just spotted this - Great stuff. If you'd told people then that you'd have to take half your clothes and your shoes off before being allowed anywhere near an aircraft and that not only would the flight deck not be accessible but it'd be armour plated and protected like Fort Knox, they'd never have believed you. True story....... I think it was 1971 and it was when QANTAS were having their 747 hangar completed at their Sydney base just as they took delivery of their first 747. The company I worked for had the contract to install the little "one-man-and-his-toolbox" lift (elevator) which was referred to as the "tail maintenance lift". I and my good mate Bob were in the engineering department and would find any excuse - ANY excuse - to do a site visit to inspect progress. (That's me....leaning against the railing watching the two blokes working!!)Not long after that first 747B arrived we just HAD to do a site visit because we had learned (from the two mechanics installing the little elevator) that it (the 'plane) was sitting on the apron outside the hangar! When we arrived and had walked around the aircraft in awe, Bob said to me "Let's go on board and have a look around". We used to wear white dust-coats back then when visiting installation sites and Bob had a clipboard under his arm. There was a set of airstairs leading up to the forward entry, not a soul in sight so up we went. We spent over 30 minutes aboard that 'plane, inspecting it from top to bottom, front to back and nobody blinked an eye. Try and do that today.
