.....That is the ONLY way it's measured here in California.... Quite seriously, it is the way distance is considered in the rural areas of Oz too. When we first came here it took a while to get used to the answer to "How far is it to Lismore (or wherever)?" being in the form of "An hour and a half (or whatever)"! To find out the distance I'd go into Google Maps and see for myself because everyone uses the time measurement, not distance. Many years ago, when we lived in Sydney, we met a couple in our block of units who had only been out from England for a matter of weeks. Michael said one evening over drinks that he and his wife were planning to go up to Cairns for Easter that year.....they wanted to see the Great Barrier Reef. "Who are you going to fly with, Mike....Ansett or TAA?" asked I. "Oh, we are going to drive." says Michael. With that I got up and went and took the atlas I had from the bookshelf, opened it to Australia and showed him the rough distance from Sydney to Cairns (about 2700 km by road), then flipped to Britain and compared it. They would have been trying to drive from London to beyond Istanbul. He quickly got the picture of just how big this place is!

Bruce,
Congratulations on your recent purchase! Last year, I purchased a used Nikon D40 dSLR and couldn't be happier with it. I've re-discovered the joys of making photos with an SLR!

Thanks, Alan. Yes....I'm really pleased to at last be using another SLR after so many years. And it looks as if I have a buyer for my old Nikon EM, which has been gathering dust in a camera bag in my wardrobe for at least 15 years.
