the train that gores to Morrow is a mile upon its way.
Occasionally I go for a flight from KBHB in my favorite PA-18 in FSX, just so I don't forget how, but as I have said in the past, my time now is mainly spent on Railworks. I've been messing about with multiple installs with some success. The freeware and repaints were overwhelming my normal install, and because I once bought everything in sight, the default install became huge. That means long loading times and lots of stutters.
I have made a couple discoveries that have helped me make a couple custom installs outside of the steam folder. One is strictly US, the other strictly UK. I suppose I could have another with the rest of the world but I'll leave those in the default.
If you make an install outside of steam, it will still find steam to start up and run OK, but steam can't find an external install to "fix things." So I can have one install with nothing but US routes and rolling stock. One odd thing is that you really need to have the entire Kuju folder in each install or you may be missing random textures. Small price to pay. The other thing I have done is extract and then delete every AP file. This has made installing repaints and mods a good deal easier. It also has made loading faster and it seems to run smoother.
The process is not perfect of course. With the entire Kuju folder installed it means that some UK & Euro locos will show up in the US menus and US and Euro will show up in the UK install. There are ways around that of course.
The biggest drawback is that all installs will synchronize with the workshop so that any routes and scenarios that you are subscribed to will appear in all installs. But... Guess what? There are even ways around that.
Anyway, food for discussion if anybody else still uses Railworks.
