I am sad to say that for the first time since the late 1980s, my PC no longer has Flight Simulator installed. Down the years every PC I owned always had FSim on it and over those decades I have accumulated a huge number of add-ons, most of which were collected and burned to CDs and/or DVDs. Everything - including the final installation of the sim - now sits on a 64Gb USB stick, along with other archived games saved for historical and sentimental reasons, I guess. I had not played Flight Simulator for many months, gradually shifting my interest and time away as I became more involved in music (keyboard) over the past three years. When I think back to the first edition of Flight Simulator and how I was enthralled by those blocky, jerky shapes and the PC-speaker noises I become quite nostalgic, not just about FSim but more about my life then.....where we lived, our young family, my job and our lives in general. Thirty years has just flown by, it seems.

Bruce....I hear what you're saying. Trust me when I state that I've thought about the very same thing many times.....however, I just haven't gone down that road yet. A few years ago I purchased and installed FSX/Steam. That's probably been my greatest version of Flightsim as it only takes a few moments to install or uninstall it with a few keystrokes. I'll probably always have Flightsim on my computer....even though I've only had perhaps one flight in the past 12 months or so. Surprisingly enough.....every now and then I get the urge to fly...then when I do.....I may be quite active for a period of time.
All in all....I only a a couple games installed on my machine anymore....seems I'm usually too busy to spend much time playing on the computer these days. If I do any "gaming".....I seem to spend more time in the Farm Simulator as I find it as relaxing as the early days of flightsimming.
Well....good luck my friend...keep us informed how things are going.
Cheers!

Back in January of 2012, I cheated on Flight Sim. I began a love affair with Railworks/TS2019. After the last crash of FS, I went without for a couple years but after getting used to the steam way of gaming I bought FSX-SE. I fly it now and then, but not with the excitement of FS98 with Golden Wings despite the improvement in graphics and the ever increasing detail of the aircraft, I left her and fell in love with my childhood sweetheart: Trains. Its a little after 5 pm on a Friday afternoon and I have been playing with trains for 6 hours Time for Dinner. I do hope you guys will all hang around for the occasional conversation though. I stop by regularly but I'm not very dependable anymore. Keep smiling!

I fear FS is a dying thing. Forums elsewhere the traffic and discussion is much less than it used to be. Several old timers have passed on or moved into other things leaving an emptiness. P3D4 (which I bought) really needs a supercomputer to run. I rarely use it especially as a modded FSX looks way better to my eyes. XP11 which I also bought in a moment of "what do you want for Xmas dear?" to and fro'ing "Oh I don't know, I'll just get XP11 shall I?" Never use it and it too needs a high end PC. I was never convinced re its much touted flight models anyhoo. Occasionally (once per month maybe) I dip into FSXSE.
I have rediscovered Il-2 1946 and Falcon BMS. The Mods of both there are marvelous and being of an older generation, run like a dream on modern machines. Not modern graphics but that is not the attraction.

I check in to the forum often, though don't post much; but enjoy reading the threads that arise.
Fly Golden Wings on my "old" WinXP OS from time to time..still find it relaxing.

......I have rediscovered Il-2 1946 and Falcon BMS. Falcon was one of the first true combat sims I bought....not long after Microprose was taken over by Spectrum-Holobyte. (I still think that is one of the coolest IT names!)

Back in Microprose days, I had Falcon but could never wrap my head or reflexes around combat jets. I also had Knights of the Sky and that remains to this day the only "campaign" game I ever completed. Biplanes and early monoplanes were more my speed. Which is why I fell in love with Golden Wings back in FS98 days. I don't always go flying, but when I do, I prefer a bright yellow Cub.

I just had a look at the Falcon BMS information. Wow! They've come a long way since the original Falcon 4.0 was released.
Knights of the Sky was one of my favourites, as was Red Baron.

The Microprose days. I did give Falcon a go back then, however, my computer just didn't have the horsepower to run it and I too never got my head around all the systems. But....I'm in complete agreement.....Knights of the Sky as well as Red Baron where probably the ONLY two combat sims I ever played and truly enjoyed. Somewhere in my archive of "Stuff" I think I still have both of the programs. Probably on 5-1/4 disks...(smile). I know that if I no longer have the programs....I'm positive I still have the Knights of the Sky instruction booklet. The pencil drawings of the WWI aircraft were always some of my favorite. How times have change.....so much work went into even the publications on how to play the games. Okay...time to put my "Oldness aside"....but those were some happy times!! Thanks fella's for the trip down memory lane. (Seems that journey is getting shorter and shorter. (smile)). Cheers!

FS is hardly dying. With all dure respect, (I'm speaking as a FS9'er) have a look at the various file libraries out there. There is always new planes, sceneries, textures & even the odd car or two being released. There are sme of us that still prefer FS2004, for various reasons, such as range of scenery, planes, sloping runways, and so on, that the other sims do not have, as well as the ability to be run on modest PC's & laptops.
WE have Golden Wings, The Ford Tri-Motor Project, amazing Alaskan scenery (Misty, Tongass etc) as well as some unique Space scenery in the pipeline.
So, we are still very much alive, & are very thankfull for those developers, Milton & team, Shessi, & a whole lot of others, that support our FS2004 sim.
Regards, Robin

Hey there guys! Yes, my newest PC I purchased about 2 years ago never got FS installed on it. I do have my last PC still working and it does still have FS9 on it but I haven't fired it up on well over a year. I started FS back in the mid to late 90s (around 96 or 97 I think) so it's been well over two decades for me. Sad that it's over. I hoped for a comeback a few times over the last 4 or 5 years but it seems the era has past. I do however have many fond memories and have met a few very nice people that I will always remember. With that said, here are a few videos I found on youtube that I made over the years. Most are gone now... lost or misplaced but these popped up in an old youtube account. ahhh... memories... www.youtube.com/watch?v=V85byZQe5Gswww.youtube.com/watch?v=hnTyhRHkL4gwww.youtube.com/watch?v=YRJc5qp6QOk
