Oh, and here's something that might interest one of you compulsive repainters and traffic engineers: the NYPD operated out of Floyd B. for some time, and they had at least one Stinson Reliant. I've seen a photo.
Unfortunately the photo was black & white so no telling what the colors were (looked very dark so I suspect either black or dark blue) but if somebody could find out, that would be an interesting repaint either for an AI or the regular flyable Bill Lyons Stinson. Indeed somebody could create some interesting missions for it.

That's one of the paints provided for the Stinson in Lago's "Roaring Thirties" Stinson & Staggerwing set.
If they got it right, the basic color was blue.
But then, they didn't get a lot right in that set. The Air Corps Staggerwing paint had really major errors, and the police Stinson had "NYPD" marked in one location and "NY State Police" in another. I remember when I got it I had trouble figuring out which one to change, but I finally went with NYPD. So I guess we can't be sure about their use of blue, either. They may have been guessing...
Does anyone know what color NYPD cruisers were in those days? It might be a fair guess that their airplane(s) was/were the same color as their cars...

The photo I saw did say NYPD; of course that was who was stationed at Floyd Bennett. Their hangar was located behind the Navy hangar; they seem to have shared it with the Coast Guard, before the USCG moved to their new base over on the far side of the peninsula. I didn't put any distinguishing lettering on it because I was not able to find a photo of that particular hangar.
I share your lack of faith in LAGO's getting things right. Bill's Stinson is far better than theirs and would be a natural for a repaint.
But I know absolutely nothing about the NYPD's vehicular paint schemes from that era. Possibly you could Google something up. I'll be very interested in whatever you come up with.

Yeah, I would've felt a bit burned if I'd bought that set. I don't mind fixing errors in freeware, but I expect payware publishers to make the effort to get it right.
As it was, I got my copies of the two planes free from the guy who made them in exchange for a pair of accurate USAAC Staggerwing paints. I said Lago was welcome to use them in their release but I guess they didn't want to bother substituting a few texture files. Or maybe they thought it was too much work to add one more name to the credits, although I didn't even ask for that...
