1/ I'm having fun building WW2 airfields in southern England (I've got SilverWings) & I've just thought it might be nice to remove as much modern stuff as I can. I gather Golden Wings is of this era?
2/ I thought I'd put FS9 into an external drive & add Golden Wings & I'd like to know if this is the way to go?
3/ I've backed up my hard drive so I have a copy of FS9 so the other way is just to install Golden Wings to my current FS9?
4/ I assume that adding GW will remove all modern stuff & change the terrain to what it was 70 yrs ago?
I'd appreciate any comment or help from those who've done what I hope to do or am thinking of doing......

Gypsy!!!
An opinion from a relative newby: put them both on your main drive if you have room. Both operate just fine on my setup. I can run my current/modern stuff on FS9 and my early to WWII stuff on GW3.
I build all my scenery on FS9 and transfer the "old " or "vintage" stuff to GW3 after building/testing on FS9.
I install and leave ALL my aircraft in FS9 for testing. Once the "vintage" planes works well, I copy them to GW3.
I did "join" some years ago - but that was just to steal Aircraft and scenery. Once I really discovered GW3 - not a year ago - I've described it as the most significant Flight Simming experience since I began in the old line drawing (and a clicking sound for engine noise!!!) days.
Again, this is absolutely one man's opinion, but it works vwery well for me!
Enjoy!

Well, I finished reading your entire e-mail. I'll let the experts answer the part about deleting all the modern stuff.
My two cents worth: GW3 is far more than credible for the intended period, but to say ALL the modern stuff is gone may be overstating a bit. Not every runway in the world that was grass has had the concrete/asphalt/gravel removed and replaced, but the remaining "modern" things are unobtrusive and do not get in the way of the "vintage" experience.
Again, one man's experience and opinion!!!

"I assume that adding GW will remove all modern stuff & change the terrain to what it was 70 yrs ago?" Not necessarily. Tom Constantine probably knows more about this than anyone, but I think we've all discovered that there is a glitch in the taxiway surfaces that pretty much everyone ends up asking about. There are other objects that remain when they shouldn't. I set my GW3 install to replicate 1930, but still haven't figured out how to delete the Golden Gate and San Francisco Oakland Bay bridges. I would assume that you will find similarly inappropriate objects in your neck of the woods.
I currently run FS9, FSX, and GW3 from my C: drive and Silver Wings from my external hard drive. All work as advertised. Like Stew, I do my development work in my "stock" - almost stock - FS9 install, and when it's perfected, move the end products to either Silver Wings or GW3 as appropriate. My guess is that a majority of the folks on this forum have multiple installs and no two have the same arrangement. No matter how you try to set up your system, if you have problems someone here will probably have already been there and know how to help you straighten it out. It's good to have friends in high (or low, depending on how you look at things) places.

1/ I'm having fun building WW2 airfields in southern England (I've got SilverWings) & I've just thought it might be nice to remove as much modern stuff as I can. I gather Golden Wings is of this era? Not exactly. GW3 is primarily a 20s-30s setup. It does cover up (not actually remove) airports that were not in existence after WWII. That is more complete in the US, but some work was done in England and Australia. Nevertheless you may find it useful for your WWII fields. You can certainly do that. I have both FS9 & GW3 on (the same) external HD. Following the instructions in the file will allow you to install it on the same drive as FS9 if you have room. [quote[3/ I've backed up my hard drive so I have a copy of FS9 so the other way is just to install Golden Wings to my current FS9? [/quote] There is no uninstall so I will always recommend a fresh install of FS9 (Don't forget the 9.1 upgrade). Lots less heartache if you need to delete. Not 100%. As mentioned above, some modern airports are still in the database though covered with terrain. You can choose to start at KSEA for example but your plane will be in trees with no runway in sight. Most of the work was done in the US as it was expected that others would join in and add their own neighborhoods. That did happen to a certain extent and you will find many addons in our downloads section, but there are still many anachronisms present. Also autogen was a problem that a few people wrestled with. I never saw it but some users reported a dozen churches per square mile It's a great idea that is really only about 80% finished. When Bill had to cut down on his computing and quit developing, we lost our driving force and our chief innovator. But, it still lives And there are still a few users here who have GW3 as their primary sim. I am certain that you will enjoy it and will get help when you need it. I'm going to move this thread to the GW3 forum as it might attract some additional attention there.

In addition to everything said, GW3 adds new ground textures for the entire world. In my opinion, they are the best for FS9. Gives an atmosphere of the early days of flight. I have also added a WW2 atmosphere, scenery and aircraft, to parts of Europe, North Africa, and the South Pacific.

Thanks for all the info....I've twigged that GW is a seperate sim from FS9? Perhaps I've not read enough about it! As long as my WW2 stuff will fit in it sounds great. I do have enough hard drive space by the way.........
My favourite aircraft is an Auster for low & slow flying by the way......
Cheers, Terry.

Not a complete sim, it requires FS9 as a base, but it makes lots of changes.
