I want to use some out of area scenery ojects that I've seen in some Gary Burns WW2 sceneries ( Hawkinge, Scampton, Down Ampney, & Croydon) especially some hangars & brick entrances to underground shelters. I've tried to use these object with Instant Scenery but get an out of area restriction message. What do I need to do to remove the out of area restriction? I gather I need a decompiler but what? & how does it work?
In the readme for RAF Down Ampney 1944 Gary Burns writes: "Copyright: There is none !!! Do what ever you want with these files ... if you can make money off of them then good for you. If you want to reverse engineer them, modify them and pass them off as your own then go ahead - in fact just contact me and I'll send you the source files. I made these files for entertainment and I upload them in the spirit you'll get as much fun out of them as I did. Cheers Gary"
I've used the email in the readme to ask for his files but had no reply so I'm hoping someone here can tell me how to read & use these files consisting of bgl & bmp files. Thanks.

Get BGLXML 1.8 here- www.scenery.org/design_utilities_a.htm-installation is simply extracting to a folder of your choice. Run the 'xmlshell.exe' to de-compile the selected .bgl file. This will yield an .xml file and the extracted .mdl files. Run Instant Scenery's 'Library Maker' program. Select the desired .mdl files and save as a new <object library>.bgl. The objects in the new library will be global. If you have the original sceneries installed, DO NOT overwrite the original .bgls. Install the new .bgl and required .bmps as a new object library. Dave

You're a brick Dave. I'll give these dark arts a whirl.....the objects I want are installed which is how I came to see them. I'll add the new ones in a airfield scenery folder I'll make for the next airfield I do. Hope that'll do the trick?! I've tracked Gary Burns down as a member at SimViation having put a post there about him & his scenery. I PM'd him but haven't had a reply.
Cheers.

It's taken me 90 mins of playing around but I now have the objects showing in Instant Scenery. My worry is being unable to repeat it for other objects I might need!! I was getting so frustrated because nothing worked & then Bingo......but what did I do right I ask?!! Thanks for your help Dave.

I have one library bgl that I'm using Dave, but I can't get it to produce another mdl file with the xlm file from another bgl file I'd like to use. Can you hint as to what I'm not doing properly? I get this message in the result window that says Bglxml can't open the specified file, Error code 2, etc. but an xlm file is produced but no mdl. The file I want to use is in in a current scenery that I can see. I'd like to use some of those objects elsewhere.

My guess is that the .bgl does not contain a model. It is calling the model(s) from an object library. Unless the author listed required add-on object libraries, it is probably a default object.
The 'error 2' only indicates that bglxml cannot resolve a 'friendly' name from the object's GUID to provide the <!-- Object (a friendly name) --> line in the output .xml file. This does not indicate there is any thing wrong in the source .bgl or that you're doing anything improperly.
If you provide the scenery package name and the .bgl(s) you're trying to decompile, I can have a look.
For example; I installed Hawkinge and only 'Hawkinge5.bgl' contains models. The others place default objects.

Good morning Dave.
It's Hawkinge's fuel tanks, brick dispersal hut & a rusting hangar I'd like - it all looks good actually......& I've looked at my installation & can't see Hawkinge5.bgl - 4 not 5. I've had a go at 4 with no luck.
I'm in the process of making an Ibsely Airfield. It's 4 miles from me & I remember hearing the aircraft revving engines from when I was a toddler & seeing Spitfires on the preimeter track in 1947 just before it closed. I'm a member of the Ibsely Historical Group & hope to display pictures from GW3 at the Open Day in August which is why I'd like it to be as authentic as I can get it. If I get Ibsely to be half as good as Hawkinge is I'll be happy!

Just to make sure we're looking at the same scenery: Gary Burns' RAF Hawkinge 1940---hawkinge.zip from FlightSim.com.
The fuel tanks are a default object, 'gen_tank01', placed by 'hawkinge3.bgl'. I do not have FS2004 (GW3) installed anymore, so not sure what default library it is in. Check the 'generic.bgl' library in IS.
'hawkinge5.bgl' (542kb) contains 12 object models for Hawkinge. They include a tower, large brick hangers, wood huts/barracks, brick huts/barracks, revetment and a (rusting?) blister hanger.
Maybe you misplaced the file when working with BglXml??

That's the scenery that's in the GW3 update No.1 but I'll look in my backup drive as I had it in FS9 before I removed it in favour of GW3 & I added it via the update.
I don't know about misplacing it. GW3 Hawkinge seems OK & I checked the laptop too & that only has the same number of files - Hawkinge.bgl to Hawkinge4.bgl making 5 altogether. I'll have a go at Hawkinge5.bgl when I get to it.
I'll let you know how I get on.

Terry,
If you're seeing all of the scenery objects at Hawkinge, 'hawkinge5.bgl' must be in your active scenery somewhere. Without it all you should see are the fuel tanks. Maybe do a search of your drive.
I have extracted all of the models from the four G Burns RAF airfields you mentioned and have created global libraries. If you send me an e-mail I can send the package to you.

I just installed the GWUP1 material that installed Hawkinge which is the Gary Burns 1940 product you mentioned. I did the same for the laptop as I said & that doesn't have the 5.bgl either.
I'll PM you with my email addess. You are a quick worker! You know what you're doing though ;-)
