......also, this reminds me (and amazes me) how parallel the CGI and film worlds are coming together... I love it!.... It's something that doesn't overly excite me, this blending of real and fake. I like it in fantasy films (sci-fi, etc.) but I tend to reject the use of CGI in many movies that depict the real world and real-world situations. For example, in "Eight Millimetre", that train pile up was ridiculously over-the-top! It was on level terrain - no downgrade at all - and the speed at which it was travelling was certainly not excessive. Yet the end result was worse than the 1989 Cajon Pass disaster when a Southern Pacific train left the rails at 110 mph! CGI is great for many situations but I think that movie producers tend to overuse the facility......probably because it's cheaper than traditional methods of creating special effects. Bruce

Bruce i agree with ya Bruce, and as simmers we all are aware on how complicated it is to create decent looking 3D meshes to use on the game, we can just imagine the work required to make a high-poly CGI render possible... keeping this in mind i doubt we couldve had a movie as visually appealing (visual, not story-wise..) as Lucasfilm's upcoming Red Tails, or what about the Pearl Harbour dogfights? (putting aside the unrealistic flight maneuvres... focusing on visual content) looking back i think that movies like Battle of Britain really set the bar high for years to come regarding visual effects, keeping that in mind, a so called re-make of the same movie using modern CGI technology would make it even better (visually) than the original. I stress the visual part because it is what i work on, and the realism is something else... you might wanna make it as realistic as possible, but if your director/producer wants it 'to sell' then you gotta do what the boss says... no? here's a short vid i did for an assignment a year or so ago... 30-seconds that took me 3 months to do. im a firm believer that the parallel use of VFX and photo-plates in film production will allow future filmmakers to deliver stories we'd never be able to otherwise accomplish. im not stomping on past films (like BoB or Tora Tora Tora) all im saying is those kinds of epics will be more accessible to make in terms of production costs.

Steve, you might be interested to know that my son dropped his X-Box 360 in here at home yesterday as he and his girlfriend are heading off in a month's time overseas for two years (Canada). In amongst the games he has for the console is........Skyrim. I have only seen the opening 20 minutes but already I can appreciate your passion for the game. I don't know if it is my "thing", tho'.......I have never been an RPGer, tending more towards sims and action games. He also has Forza 4 - more my style of game - and I have never seen graphics as realistic as those in this sim. My wife thought I was watching a movie when in fact I was watching a replay of one of my runs in an E-Type Jaguar around Silverstone. Anyway.....I just wanted to let you know that i now don't have to buy Skyrim or a new laptop on which to play it, thanks to my son using our place as a repository! Bruce

However, if I get the opportunity I'm going to visit them in Canada in 2013 before their working visas expire and that way I'll have a chance to fulfil a life's dream to travel through the Rockies. In the meantime my grandson and I will be playing games on his X-Box! ;D Bruce

Hey Bruce! i suggest start working on your travel itinerary, there's plenty of cool avaition museums here that you gotta check out! We're also home to one of only two flying Lancs and tons of beautiful places. If you get the chance i recommend a rail trip (most especially in/around BC) oh and maybe even get yourself a Winnipeg Jets hockey jersey, you might like the designs Cheers all, happy new year!

.....If you get the chance i recommend a rail trip (most especially in/around BC) .... That's the dream I've held onto for over 40 years, Felipe. I want to do the "Rocky Mountaineer" and then the trans-Canada VIARail service from Vancouver (where my son will be based) across to Ottawa/Montreal. Fly back to the west coast and home. That's the dream; whether or not it comes true........we'll see. Bruce

Bruce.......Great news on the Skyrim!!!! Yep..... I haven't been in here much these past two weeks.....I've spent a LOT of time playing this darn game. (smile) It still amazes me that all the hours I have playing this darn thing, I haven't begun to scratch the surface of the game.....and I'm still amazed how beautiful everything is. Sure wish someone could develop a FlightSim this nice!! I know how you must feel with your son going so far from home. Make sure to tell him if he gets down this direction to give me a call......I'll treat him to a nice steak dinner somewhere. Even better.......If you decide to come over this way, please keep me informed. Can't make any promises, but Vancouver is only about 1400 miles away......perhaps I could pop up there for a couple of days and treat you both to a nice steak dinner!!! (smile) Best wishes to you and your loved ones for the coming New Year!!!!! Hope all your dreams come true my friend!!!! Cheers, P.S. A buddy of mine sent me this link to another SkyRim video that showcases some of the great scenery!!! I was surprised that about half of these I haven't yet ran across in my travels through SkyRim. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9VJh_-odSE&feature=youtu.be&hd=1

Steve, No denying the beauty of the game........it is brilliant. Right now though I'm getting my kicks belting a Jaguar D-Type around the original Nurburgring. On the subject of visiting North America, if I do come over I will certainly get in touch with you and arrange a get-together. Seriously. I'll just have to see how the next year pans out. All the best to you and Mrs. Steve for 2012. Bruce P.S. You might like this ballad..........

WHAT a Voice!!!!! Very nicely done indeed. Yep......... that's one of the songs they sing in all the pubs in Skyrim. (smile) I'd like her to do one of the other ones too......... "Ragnar the Red." Since you're character in Skyrim is Dragonborn.....here's the Dragonborn ballad sung by the same singer. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4z9TdDCWN7g&feature=mfu_in_order&list=ULI was surprised at the end of the song she actually sings the dragon language. I have never seen a game with this much depth and yet so much latitude on how you want to proceed. While it's set in a "Nordic" ancient time.......sort of.........there is also futuristic stuff (Machine contraptions that will down right get your attention.) ..................also a very modern theme at times. (I've been invited to the embassy party......of course it's a spy mission. (smile) Here's another very nice video that once again show cases some of the beautiful scenery and music in SkyRim. Keep in mind......EVERYWHERE you see in Skyrim, you can travel.......there are NO boundries anywhere.........you can explore every square inch of this beautiful scenery......and trust me......there is always something to do. (smile) www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9VJh_-odSE&feature=youtu.be&hd=1BTW........ I haven't even found about half of these places and I know I have well over 100 hours playing this darn game now....and I still bet I'm under 5% of even getting started good. (smile) Cheers,

Well, all this talk about Skyrim and the dealings of the holidays has netted my youngest son the game for the Xbox. He has been wanting it ever since it was released. After creating a character on the Xbox, and playing for several hours I was hooked. Now Dad has to get his version for the PC, the Xbox seems to be tied up.
Being experienced in MMORPGs, I can appreciate the depth of this game, quite deep too. My son has his Mage creating intense potions and spells that take down beasts five times his size. Amazing when you consider they come in at least two or more entities per zone. And, something about being a Dragon Slayer, didn't catch all that, and smithing Dwarven Armor after hunting down the ruins and holds that can be accessed for these metals.
We will see, Steam offers the game for online download at the same price as in the stores, so I will probably go that course. But, my time alloted will be little as school comes first.

John.......I have REALLY taken a liking to this darn game......still seeing new things, going new places and well.......just changing how I play the game.
Having not played many RP games before.......none probably in the past 10 years....... I hadn't a clue of really where to begin.
I now have hours upon hours playing this game......haven't kept track and probably honestly don't WANT to know how many hours I've played. (smile).....but I'm still finding more and more stuff as I go along.
I've changed my "battle" plans several times over the course of the past 3 weeks......pursuing one idea of a "strategy.......only to then change again to another.
My recent change has been more to developing a "Wizard" type character but still use my archery skills. (I stink at two handed weapons......smile)
I used the Steam client for my download and am very pleased with the process.......I had also purchased the "guide" with the game, however, that I've never been able to download. It's taken several attempts with their customer support.....but finally they agreed to refund my money but that's another story.
Cheers,

Thought I'd add one more note.
After posting the above message last evening, I thought I'd pop in for an hour or so before I head out on vacation this morning.
Well.......four hours later, I HAD to get to bed...(smile).....but once again, the game took a turn I hadn't expected at all. (Can't say too much.....don't want to ruin the experience for anyone playing the game.)
This thing is like watching a really great mystery movie, and just when you think you're figuring out where it's taking you......bang......something knew pops up and your off into another entirely knew (but good) direction.
I'm simply amazed!!!!!!!!!
Cheers,
