Christopher, Hwoever, there seems to be something amiss, as I am not seeing any shapes beyond the cab other than signal lights - which gives the impression of driving in a dark tunnel and that is not what Aberdeen to Edinburgh is about! Anywhay, thanks for the HU and I'll have a go at a few other routes. And Uchibo was another favourite. Bruce Which Operating System are you running? 7, Vista or XP? ;D Check your veiwing distance to see how far it's set. Thanks, Bruce! Christopher

I'm running W7, Chris. No problems....I've got it (Edinburgh etc) running okay now but the files are not in the path described. The installation instructions are a bit wonky, I feel. But at least it is now okay.

But at least it is now okay. According to the OpenBVE Forums, OpenBVE still has some issues with Windows 7. A lot of people on the site are having the exact problems. I uninstalled BVE 5.0 this morning and reinstalled BVE 2.6 and 4.0! I didn't hit the sack until 0400! I found a website with 450 megs of BVE 2 and 4 Addons, including your Heavy Coal! I Pigged Out! ;D www.zabikowo.net/kolej/BVE2/add%20on/ Thanks, Bruce! ;D Christopher

Reinstalled BVE 5.0 (BVETS) after finding a working link to a beta version. Kind of strange how he's got the directory structure. It's like he doesn't want BVE 4 compatibility! The 5.1 patch didn't work, so I deleted it. ;D

Interesting thread!! Since I'm committed to MSTS - mainly because of the 'large' variety of add-ons (free/payware), I was surprised to learn of Open Rails (I know, where have you been, Dan) I've looked at their site and while it looks great - I need to know if it is an easy and stable add-on or something, like Bruce noted, forever in Beta and the user takes a risk of total annihilation and destruction of their train set - I won't! Also, Bruce - you mentioned in a post a long time ago about your hand controller layout . . . mainescenery.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=trains&thread=7479&page=1I'd be interested in knowing what it is, as I received a Logitech F310 Gamepad for Xmas this year - so far, I've got steam coming out the headlamp, bells ringing in reverse, and brakes that only work when the train is stopped. When you have time, no rush! Thanks for the thread, Christopher! Dan …it’s great being a kid again – without the glue! ;D

Dan,
Open Rails just taps into an existing MSTS installation and uses the scenery and rolling stock. The original MSTS still functions on it's own as a separate sim. I added several add-on items that I had from years ago (added them to MSTS I mean) and most work OK in Open Rails but some give error messages (so I just delete those from the list that Open Rails accesses). Haven't figured out how to assess what will work without just trying it, sorry.
I have no idea how quickly development will take place, but it's worth a look and a try since it does no harm to the MSTS installation.

Also, Bruce - you mentioned in a post a long time ago about your hand controller layout . . . ...... Dan, It's a stable program, just under continual updating, as new features are added and fine-tuned. Well - it's as stable as any product running on a PC, put it that way! With regard to the gamepad, I just used the CD that came with it to install the Logitech setup program and then went into that to allocate the button functions. Saved that as a setup and then when using MSTS you just select that particular setup. It was quite straightforward. Regards, Bruce PS I just realised, after looking at that thread you linked to, that we have not seen anything of Kevin for quite some time. I hope that he has simply moved away from TOH and that nothing sinister or untoward has happened to him.BK

Interesting thread!! Thanks for the thread, Christopher! Dan Thank Grizz! He started it! ;D Christopher Oops . . . guess I should've re-read Page 1. Thanks Grizzly!! Leyland, that's what I wanted to hear, so believe I'll give it a try and see what it improves to what I have. Thanks for your input - always good to know beforehand!! Bruce, again thanks for your advice, as well - much appreciated! Regarding the Gamepad, I originally used the CD to load the basic program, but their FS2004 button layout did not work, so I configured it myself, but haven't had time to perfect it, especially a layout for 'both' Steam and Diesel operations. I tried Kevin's layout, but noted that you had developed one also and that's why I asked based on that thread/post - just curious as to your logic to the individual buttons. Regarding Kevin, as I remember, he has posted a number times since that thread, but at least a year or so ago. I know Keith keeps in touch with him and posted as such, but again that was awhile ago. Hopefully he is fine and doing well!! Dan …it’s great being a kid again – without the glue! ;D

Dan, I no longer use my gamepad in MSTS since buying the new PC. I haven't installed the Logitech program. I'll fire up the old one and see if it is still there.........stand-by! ............................................................................... ................................................... ......................... ........... ... OKAY! Here is the key mapping. I took a screenshot of it and have uploaded it to my webspace:- I hope this helps. Bruce

I'm a HUGE fan of OpenRail! I have tons of MSTS routes, stock, engines, addons, and I have no intention of giving them up anytime soon! -- All thanks to Openrail. As far as widescreen support? It does indeed support such. In fact, I run my simming computer with tripleHead2Go using Three 23-inch monitors and let me tell ya, it rocks! Even though my PC is rapidly aging, it still kicks butt with older sims and OpenRails is an incredible venture. The only thing that is keeping me from pure happiness is that they have not yet completed work on getting the activities to run well (though some do), still it's a great product for the price! I will certainly be keeping MSTS/OpenRails running into the far future. Yes, the newer sims have amazing graphics but the amount of products and the flexibility and prototypical nature of MSTS still has my seal of approval! I'm KB, and I approve this sim...hh Thank-you Tom, you confirmed what I thought, i.e Railworks seems to be the one for me. But that openrails seems to add longevity to MSTS which is still a very valid sim I think but struggling with wide screen and todays fancier graphics a little. Thanks again.

Kevin, One interesting - and enjoyable - thing I found with OR is that the frame-rate is double that for MSTS on the same route using the same activity. That, for me, is worth the price of admission. Bruce

Well, after finally getting around to downloading OpenRails and installing and reinstalling a fresh Net 3.5 Sp 1, plus all the updates and the required XNA Framework 3.1, I've found that it does not run well on my system, for some reason . . . Not sure why, as MSTS/Bin and FS9 with all their related add-ons and other programs run perfectly well, while OR does not. Some train engines will not accelerate (no throttle) and for those that do move, it's frame by frame by frame. It took me a couple of nights to get the braking systems (Engine & Train) to release and work right, as well as other notems on OR's website and other forums. Seems it is still well into development with improvements in every new version and that is the good news, as I'm confident that many of the problems, including correct steam engine dynamics, will be worked out in time, but somewhat disappointed, as the graphics and scenery look great!! Hopefully, I'll be able to figure out why it runs so slow, since I've read comments that it runs better then MSTS on other older systems . . . odd! Thanks again to everyone for the initial information - looking forward to it as it improves!! Dan …it’s great being a kid again – without the glue! ;D
