Hi all -
Good to see the usual folks still on here! I may get to be a bit more active again here soon.
What is this?!
I've been so far removed from the tools and procedures that this bit of photo scenery took me 3 days to figure out. Most of the tools I once used have since changed and made things a bit more difficult to work with.
As I finish up my engineering degree I've aimed my design project at simulation of course! Long story short, I'm designing an "active sidestick" much like what is in the latest Gulfstream G500/600. I had the chance to fly the simulator mock up of the G500 at Gulfstream and ever since have been fascinated by the technology. I'm intending on proving its usefulness in general aviation and autonomous aircraft.
What better way to fully test the design then using a simulator, in this case Prepar3D. And of course I would be needing photo scenery!
Academically I'm aiming the project at GA and UAS, but I think it would find application with many sim pilots out there. I hope to pursue it as a commercial product once I am out this college thing. If you're familiar with the Thrustmast HOTAS products, one of their joysticks simply measures force and produces joystick commands as any other joystick would. The active sidestick does this, but also uses servos to move the stick in response to force. Add the simulator into the loop and you can vary the amount of force required to move the stick depending on flight conditions - creating very realistic force feedback.
By June I hope to have a fully functioning prototype and buzzing around Prepar3D with realistic force feedback.
Anyway, thought some might be interested in the idea - I welcome anyway input! Projecting further out, I will need some beta testers! Regardless, I hope to become more active in scenery design once again. It was refreshing to be able to do a bit of design work, even if it did take me hours of troubleshooting.
Best,
Kobbe
