It's 6:05 PM Thursday here and I am watching and listening to news concerning the storming of Congress. Disturbing news, for not only US citizens but for everyone.
So I am asking.....have these news reports we are seeing been over-hyped? Is it just a small minority of Trump supporters who are engaged in this dissension?
I am concerned for your future and, as a direct result, the future of democracy.

I know where you are coming from, Bruce. I love America. I have been there five times, three semi-business trips to California, three weeks visiting a friend in Phoenix, Arizona and two months with my wife on a glorious road-trip around mainly the South-West. We didn't visit any big towns because we wanted to see rural America. we drove through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Louisiana on our way to visit an email friend in Mississippi. Then via route 66 through Oklahoma, towards Utah, Nevada and finally back home. It was the best holiday ever. I think America has some of the most spectacular scenery on earth and Americans are the friendliest people you could hope to meet. I often say that I have never met an American I didn't like.
It greatly saddens me to see what America has become. Politically and socially it seems to have split into two violently opposing groups that literally hate each other. I do not see any answer, not in the short term anyway.

For people of our age group, Nige, it is very disturbing. To me it just feels so damned wrong.
Growing up in the 1960s, for me America was always a symbol of stability and of strength. Always there to be relied upon. Things might go off the rails elsewhere in the world but the USA was like a bloody great rock....solid granite. Not any more, though. The mismanagement of the nation over the past four years, and certainly over the past twelve months, has had a diabolical effect on how we now view the United States.
Hopefully things will improve from here on.

I missed this completely. I think 25% of the US population thinks Trump is the greatest. 15% see him as a way to advance their agenda. 40% think he is as bad as he is and want to be rid of him and the other 20% just don't care. So, the pendulum swings. Just now it is in the green but since nobody will put the Orange Clown in prison he will be loose to influence the "don't cares" and try to swing the pendulum back to him. We can hope President Biden can work a miracle and keep smart people energized for 2 and then 4 years. Also, consider that crap like this has happened before, it just didn't get instant world wide news coverage. We take a few steps back now and then, but we keep moving forward in the end.

I missed this completely......... ......We take a few steps back now and then, but we keep moving forward in the end. Thanks, Tom. I get very wary these days about relying on the mainstream media for un-hyped information and I don't use any form of social medium apart from this and one other forum. Therefore it is confusing at times like this. Thanks again for taking the time to give your personal view and I hope that the US continues to move out of this dark period.

Just a side note here, still in North America (The Wild Frontier) but in Canada... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denis_LortieSeveral years ago, Janet & I toured the Parliament Building in Quebec City and the tour guide pointed out the bullet holes near the ceiling. I suspect that 30 years from now the insurrection will be just a tour highlight.

I recall that event, Tom.....but until reading the Wiki article wasn't familiar with the name of the bloke. But I certainly remember it being on the front page of the newspaper.....back in those halcyon days before the internet.
