Ok guys, I've pretty much decided now to start adding some Mesh to my FS9 and Golden Wings sims. I started thinking about it awhile back when kbr posted his fantastic pictures of Alaska in his Alaska Pipeline thread - incredible! mainescenery.proboards24.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=genav&thread=1155266132&page=1That being said, I need some advice before I start buying, installing, and then wondering what the hell happened. I believe kbr is using FS Genesis mesh. So, here are a few questions I have - any answers would be great! 1. What is the best Mesh size 38.2m, 76.4m, etc. 2. Does Mesh affect framerates - how much? 3. What Mesh size does GW3 use? I know it is different then FS9 default. 4. What Mesh developer is the best - seems FS Genesis is the most popular. 5. If you buy Mesh segments, as sold by FS Genesis, how does it blend with the areas that are still default? 6. Since I'm using both FS9 and GW3, can I buy once and have both sims use the same package? (I believe I read somewhere that Tom does something to allow both to use one install - not sure how that would work). 7. FS Genesis has memberships for sale with up to a 75% discount, but expensive up front - is this a good deal? 8. Regarding Landclass - how much better is other Landclass (FS Genesis) then the default Landclass in either FS9 or GW3? Thanks!! Dan …it’s great being a kid again – without the glue! ;D

1. What is the best Mesh size 38.2m, 76.4m, etc.
The 76m mesh is a big step up from the default, but 38m is even better.
2. Does Mesh affect framerates - how much?
No
3. What Mesh size does GW3 use? I know it is different then FS9 default.
GW3 contains no mesh. It uses whatever you have. The only difference on the ground is texturing which given Bill's artistry may look like improved mesh.
4. What Mesh developer is the best - seems FS Genesis is the most popular.
FS Genesis is most popular for a reason. It is simply the best. Justin is the only mesh developer who constantly updates his mesh with new data and the absolute best at interpolating out spikes and holes in the data.
5. If you buy Mesh segments, as sold by FS Genesis, how does it blend with the areas that are still default?
Seamlessly
6. Since I'm using both FS9 and GW3, can I buy once and have both sims use the same package? (I believe I read somewhere that Tom does something to allow both to use one install - not sure how that would work).
Instead of installing to the default folder, I installed all my FSG mesh to it's own folder in regional sub-folders (Actually on a different hard drive) so that I can activate in any number of installs from the same locatiion. In my main FS9 install I have everything FSG makes activated. In GW# I have the buffer mesh and 76m world wide. In an install I call FS-VFR which has all my Georenders and France VFR and other photoreal type scenery, I have no mesh at all since they conflict. It does mean setting everything up in the scenery library which can get tedious if you do it like I did.
7. FS Genesis has memberships for sale with up to a 75% discount, but expensive up front - is this a good deal?
I bought a lifetime Galaxy membership. I'm not disappointed. I just got North America for FSX free.
8. Regarding Landclass - how much better is other Landclass (FS Genesis) then the default Landclass in either FS9 or GW3?
I wouldn't use it in GW3 because the default is fairly accurate for 1930, but it is an amazing improvement in FS9 and superlatives escape me to describe how it improves FSX where the land has no class at all in the default. The downside is that it only covers the continental US.
Thanks!!
We're here for you as my name tag use to say when I was working.

Perfect!! ;D
That's exactly what I wanted know, Tom. One more question though - relating to Question/Response #3 & 6.
If GW3 has no mesh, as noted in #3, and uses whatever FS9 uses, which right now is the Default mesh, then can I assume, relating to the response to #6, that if I install FSG in FS9, that GW3 will automatically use it as well? Which it that is true, would eliminate a separate install of FSG in it's own folder. Correct?
Thanks again, Tom!!

Dan …it’s great being a kid again – without the glue! ;D No, If you install FSG Mesh in FS9, then GW3 will still use the default because remember, GW3 is installed over a default copy of FS9. Each install will use the mesh it has. So to use FSG Mesh in both, it must be installed in both OR installed into its own folder and activated in both

Ok, got it. I forgot that GW3 was installed over a default copy of FS9.
Now, not knowing how FSG is bought and installed, can I buy it once and install it in both or do I have to buy a copy for FS9 and a copy for GW3?
If I have to install it in its own folder for use by both, which would not be a problem, how is each sim "activated" to use that folder?

You can buy once and point it where you want. If you build a folder for FSG Mesh, just go into each install's scenery library and activate as you would any other scenery.
Here are the entries from one install of FS9. They'll show you also the folder structure I used so that I can pick and choose what to activate depending on what I want from each install. You'll notice I have moved them down to the bottom of the config pile so they will be "under" just about everything and layered them according to resolution.

Excellent!!
That explains it and if they describe the folder structure you use then I'll install one for both. Perfect! Now, to do some figuring and off to the store I go . . . ;D
Thanks again!

2. Does Mesh affect framerates - how much? No My own experience is that it does affect FR below 38 m with a terrain complexity superior to 80 as the number of triangles dramatically increases.

Incredible I bought it (FS Genesis-Alaska), installed it, and have been flying all over that great country since yesterday afternoon. I've flown to Anchorage, Fairbanks, Kodiak, Cold Bay, and Dutch Harbor in an F-86 (needed to see what I could see - fast). I've flown to Valdez, Whittier, up to Talkeetna, Trappers Creek, and Denali National Park. Took a McDonnell XP-67 right over the top of Mt. McKinley at 20,420' - the Mountain is 20,320' and it was Grand (FS Genesis was right on the money)! I've flown over, under, and right next to some of the greatest looking canyons, valleys, and mountains I have ever seen. So releastic, so life like, so immersing that I can't stop flying . . . ;D So, thanks for the help Tom. The install into 'one' folder works just fine for both FS9 and GW3 (took awhile to figure out that I needed a folder within the main folder called 'Scenery' containing the mesh files to get the sims to recognize the add-on), but it all works great with the BEV textures I have in FS9 and Bill's great textures in GW3. ;D ;D Now, I've got to get the rest of the Mesh segments and anything else FS Genesis has to sell. I should be at the race track (NASCAR) right now, but to hell with it - I've got places to see, people to meet, and planes to fly . . . Dan …it’s great being a kid again – without the glue! ;D
