Dear tohers, as you can see, our small sub-forum is now dedicated to an old friend, Leon Louis. I am sure most of you know about his work for the FS world, it's not possible to go through the FS dedicated sites and not to come in front of one of his paints.
Leon was not only a painter but a scenery designer as well. Who knows, may be with the time he should become a plane modeller (I'm pretty sure about that: Monsieur Louis, like every artist in this world, had the genius of curiousity inside). He released 352 files at Flightsim and 370 at Avsim; his first file at Avsim, is from February 2003 (a Seabee). The last one is a handsome Black and cream Piper; in the middle there's an explosion of colors applied to different models of planes. May be you don't know, but to do a simple repaint may require hours and hours of joy, but also headaches...when you see a plane or a repaint for FS, you have to remember each minute someone spent creating them. Minutes of a life.
People who knew him (and there are a few among us) speak nothing but gentle words of him. He was a daily presence here, and I hope all those who pay a visit to the TOH, will remember him and his work. And his dedication.

I agree, very well put.
He did some great bush scenery. Some that were just lovely to fly into, others that would put even the most skilled bush pilot to the test.
His absence has left a hole in the flightsim community.

Now that is a dedication I can fully agree with. I have everything by way of scenery extras that I could find for Misty Moorings - and a lot of it bears his name. I often searched Avsim using just his name and saw amany interesting and inspiring things. Some of my favourite planes wear Leon Louis skins - the Stampe, The Bell 47, Rick Piper's Chippie... and even my own favourite - the Christen Eagle!
I haven't counted my total skins for the Eagle, but there must be almost seventy by now - and all Leon's eagle skins are there too. I think he loved the Eagle almost as much as I do. He'd have loved the extra textures I coaxed out of Kevin Lechmanski so that we can now do different paints on opposite wings.

Its amazing the impact one person can have. Today as I was looking through some recipes, I found one Leon had send a couple years ago. It was from "Festival de la Gibelotte" de Bord-Tracy in Quebec. The Gibelotte was originally a stew of sorts made with wild fish & game but later versions left out the wild game and used perch or barbotte. In essence it is a fish & vegetable soup. From very early in FS2002 until he entered the hospital, Leon and I chatted about everything and nothing nearly every day. I miss him. And this may be the place to mention two others who have gone before. Mel Roberts, another Quebecois taught me how to make scenery in patient daily online chats. He's been gone nearly 7 years. Art Nichols used to sit here in this room on Thursdays and make scenery for Golden Wings. We had in mind to do the entire Northeast US and Maritime Canada and we made a good dent in it before FS2000 came along. Art fought cancer for a long time, but cancer still wins most of the time. So I think I'll go raise a glass to the memory of Mel, Art & Leon.

Tom, I never met your friends, nor have I ever met you. Your words, however, bring to me the spirit of your friendships. Maybe you are a poet, maybe a simple romantic, and maybe you just spend too much time at altitude using a joystick to find direction and explore life’s mystery. But clearly you have a talent for creating brotherhood. Thank you for telling us more about the people who helped create a bygone world where we can go after a hard day, boot up and take off, and leave our troubles behind. For those of us who log hours and hours flying amongst pixels, relaxing as we watch daylight melt on canvas covered wings, and wonder about the next cloud on the horizon or where we might eventually land in life, you are all appreciated.

Tom,
I never met Leon, but I shared emails in my early pursuits at repaint in FS2000. He was a one-of-a-kind gentleman. Helped me with every little trivial question I had. All the repaints I send up can and should be attributed to Leon Lewis, because he got me started and did all I could ask for as a tutor. I, like you, miss my emails with him, he always had kind words to say about my plastic modeling too. I regret that I never met the man personally.
But if you're online in Heaven Leon, I hope you are pleased with the work of one of your understudies, I can never thank you enough.

Just noticed today would have been Leon's birthday.
As long as someone in the world has a Leon skin on an aircraft then he's still with us in spirit!

Dear Friends
As you may have spotted in the news - AVSIM has been hacked and wiped off the net. Apparently totalled.
Most of (if now all) Leon Louis' stuff was online there. Now it may be permanently lost to the world.
Should we try to recover as much of his work as possible?

I have the habit of backing up everything I download to cds, so I know I have some of his stuff. If a place can be found to host the files, I'd be happy to upload anything I can find on my cds.
