..........and I will unistall it tomorrow......or not?
(An FSX Bloggerish intended thread)
I am right now searching into my mind at least 3 good reasons to keep it. OK, I'll evaluate the "thing" deeper during this week. At the end, I hope to come to a decition, will FSX stay in my HD? or not?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Warning: the whole content of this thread shows only the personnal opinion the author; it is not intended to express the Definitive Judgement of the new simulator. FPS won't be a subject here)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Good points for today
1- Water textures. Guys, waters and water effects are Beautiful. , the water environment is a joy of a landscape. Waves are simply real. The water has a 3d deepness. Nice
2- Animated world: runways and skies are crowded of cars and birds. Not bad.
Bad points for today
1- Terrain textures: looks like someone gave a child a pen. And what does children do? childish drawing. Awful textures, make Alpine mountains looks like some sort of arabian desert. Terrain textures are less than a sort of "impressionism" unfinished paint.
2- Plane models: no news here. Only the Beaver and the Maule have a a certain sense of future. The others are more or less the same. Flight dynamics not analized yet. Each plane now has two mdls, one for the external and other for the interior. And the C172 now is around 9 mb heavy (against 722 kb of the Fs9 one). Textures seems to be changed a lot, so, still trying to find my way through them....
3- the HD space required: almost 14 gb for the Proff- version. Well, it's not the space by itslef that worries me...but the future addons. I have an FS9 hangar of 23 gb...not to speak of sceneries and gauges folder. Does the future requires a 1000 terabytes HD?
"It's pretty much the same" points
1- Weather environment: clouds and sky and day\night textures seems to be the same ones of FS9. No noticed changes here at the moment.
2- Planes sounds. No further explanation.

That is my number one complaint!!!!! The terrain textures are bad especially the mountains. Hopefully the 3rd party developers will be releasing improved textures in the near future.

The default land class is the worst in any version of FS ever. An example of the several steps backwards in this version.
If you have working FS9 landclass, you can use it in FSX by placing it in Addon Scenery\scenery or by giving it a seperate folder and activating in the scenery library. That will help a lot.
(It will not work in scenery\BASE\scenery where it has been for the previous 3 versions. One more thing that was not broken but got fixed beyond all repair.)

.....for some reason, the only textures that looks fine is the summer ones. This is odd, but when I ask myself Why, I can't find any answer......

If I were designing a cute new airplane flying game for the 12 year old gaming crowd, I'd concentrate on making it look good in the bright sunshine of a Summer day. I'd give them neat missions to play and beat. In fact I would only put all the new bells and whistles in the missions because that's all I would be selling. And while my decisions would upset a few people who thought they were buying a flight simulator, the money would just roll in and the airplane flying game would be a great success.

Interesting point. The new interface seems to go into that direction, with the music and all that cosmetic threatment to a deludent "sim". I never played missions, and I won't start now, so no deal for me in this area. If FSX is the prelude to a future new game and not a sim anymore, will the actual market moves toward FSX as today, as a serious simulator? that could be the only reason why to keep FSX in my HD. But I am not a future teller, so...
To be or not to be...

How could I forget to mention that!!!!!!
" the money would just roll in and the airplane flying game would be a great success. "
Ahhhhhhh I don't want a game!!!!!!!!!! What I have always like about flight simming was that it in made you think and could actually teach you something about aviation. When I started taking real flying lessons after may years of flight simming I had a pretty good knowledge on how a airplane works, flight dynamic, communications and navigation. It will never be just a game for me.

Windrunner- I pre-ordered the delux edition expecting a much heralded improved simming experience. Huge disappointment for me.
Unlike yourself I installed it ran through some favorite areas of the globe..and quickly uninstalled it. Personally I can use the 14GB for other addons for FS9. The scenery did look like a child drew it. Just my opinion ;>)

The big payware companies will try to make it a sim up to a point but they can still make money (perhaps more money) by building game addons. Hobbyists have already been systematically excluded by Microsoft breaking almost all backward compapbility with design tools. If one wants to do any serious work with FSX, one needs 3DS Max which will only set one back about $5000 (yes thousand) USD. That certainly throws a wet blanket on hobbyists.
That's all it is to Microsoft. I do not recall ANY of the Aces team saying "the sim." I believe you will find that they have universally referred to it as "the game." An airplane flying game is what they are selling. Action! Adventure! Missions! Awards! Yippee!

I asked this question in my blog many months ago: Will the announced ACES "3rd party community involvement" be for us, the users, or just the people who profit financially from it?
It seems that question has now been clearly answered.

.....too many questions coming to my mind while flying (I should say "jumping", only 7\9 fps on the screen) over Costa Rica with the Caravan....
So Aces decided to start the whole thing from zero. This remembers me each time a new chief arrived in command, he thought he was the first man in the world to discover the Boiling water. Well, this time they are serious, they (Aces and MS) could do it and they did.
Graphics are not as good as they should be, today's utilities won't allow us to expand the sim as we would like, and perfomance is less than mediocre...
We do not have the right equipment to fight this battle against perfomance: hardware and software (Vista etrc). I seriously doubt it'll be there for the whole world in the next 2\2.5 years. And then, it'll be FSXI time.......it's like fighting a panzer on a horse and a sword (yeah, Polish did it and we know how it ended).
The only question to answer to keep it or not for today is: will I enjoy FSX? is someone out there fully enjoying FSX today?

..after reading posts in other forums, I can see a general shadow of silence falling over FSX. Those who were excited fans after the installation are rediscovering FS9...
(So there are no fans here either)
I am about closing this thread and uninstall FSX. Lesson learned.

Very Interesting! My question from the release of this thing is Why? Why, must we once again be reduced to people in a dark room looking for a light. After all the anticipation, the waiting, the endless chatter on all outlets where simmers are ,the surveys, the serous recommendations by the Simming public,we still ,after all that have to say Why? Is there such a thing as evolution,I would think?Like we all buy products. They offer what we want.Be it a dishwasher, entertainment system,a car,a can opener,or a plane. When they don't deliver what was promised,we are disappointed. What we don't do is start to try to improve the thing that don't deliver what we expect it to. If my wife got a new dishwasher, with all the features, buttons galore, and it did not perform as advertised, watch out!,no removing the back door and "Tweaking"the thing here.Yes we all have different rigs,We all see things differently.FSX is OK with some SO-So with others, and just plain not good for ,it appears ,to be, many.Sure if your adept in the technological world ,you may create, something thats good for you,if not..well.So I will wait. The decated Simmers, will again survive this. The Gifts from those wonderful people will start, the honest addons will flow, and after, much hand ringing, disappointment, tweaking, yakking, and wearing pink visors, we may get ,what we may have already, that is a Sim we could live with. Yet,I gotta ask WHY? We all really do want this to work well. Our market seems secure to those who use it.So they humor us with a new "Busy box." Whats next? an "X-Box? " Vin " Is not he magnificent son?But Mommy the emperor has no clothes on"

Interesting language beana, but too much obscure and complicated for me. I wish I understand what you are talking about; anyway, all in good fun.
