We have arrived!!
Log Notes:
Got up early – had restful nights sleep – Gin will do that, you know!
Nice morning - Sun just coming up
Took off two hours early 05:30
Radio message from base – patio/deck chairs floating all over lake – commander upset
Didn't retrieve from wings night before – didn’t notice in morning – too dark
Gin will do that, you know!
Followed C-47 out – overtook shortly!
Climb to 9900’ – beautiful country below
See Mount Kilimanjaro off in distance
Alter course to see tallest ‘free-standing’ mountain
Climb to 19,500’ – circle 5 times to gain altitude - plane doesn’t like it – no air, no power
Made two passes over table top – dramatic view – skimmed top with keel
All down hill now – landed at Mombasa Kenya
Took off after brief lunch – 2 McDonalds Macs and large fries
Final leg – beautiful clear day – PBYs everywhere
Ocean and coast look great
Made several passes upon arrival at Dar-es-Salaam – Landed
Ran over PBY
Turned off engines, avionics, lights and oh . . . that calm silence . . .
End
Final Note: From Scotland to Africa, it’s been an incredible voyage and even though in a near virtual environment, the passage over 6000 miles of land and water was one of originality, excitement, and visual enlightenment that unless one has the time and money, could only have been achieved through a flight simulator and GW3.
My thanks to all including Bruce, Leyland, Brian and all those that were directly or indirectly involved in this adventure, including Bill and Lynn Lyons for GW3, Stuart Green for the Short Sunderland Mk III (I will miss this plane), and of course Harry Levy, who if having not completed this mission, could not have passed it on . . .
Dan
…it’s great being a kid again – without the glue! ;D
