For the fifth leg of this flight, I decided to fly, starting from Rivers Inlet (YRN) east along Owikeno Lake, turn north, follow a canyon up to South Bentinck Arm and follow Burke Channel back out to sea. From there I would be landing at Bella Bella Denay Island (CYJQ.) There is some lovely scenery along this route. On a side note: Though I am currently flying in Xplane, there is some wonderful freeware scenery of this area for MS Flight Simulator by Holger Sandmann. Look for his Bella Coola scenery at Avsim. This includes both mesh and landclass to give a wonderful representation of the Bella Coola area. FS9 and FSX both have their own version. Here is the route I followed. Due to bad weather, I decided to go ahead and take off from the land runway. I was a little concerned about the sloped runway, so I only carried the necessary weight and fuel. ;D Once off, the weather turned out to be even worse than expected. Finally back out as sea. Coming in for landing at CYJQ. I'm definitely going to have to refuel, but first I think I'll head inside and see if there's anything warm to drink. ;D

Downloading the FS9 scenery now, Kevin. I'll fly this tonight if I get the opportunity. I will also use real weather so I hope that it improves!! Bruce

Looks very 'convincingly' cold, Kevin! Nice natural shots - especially 4 and 5. Xplane has great flakes - lots and lots of them in fact. Dan …it’s great being a kid again – without the glue! ;D

If the weather improves by the time you do your flight, I recommend when you reach the area that I have marked as waypoint 4 on my map, turning east and taking a little detour over Bella Coola (CYBD) as this area is very pretty. I would have done this myself if visibility wasn't so limited during my flight. Looks very 'convincingly' cold, Kevin! Nice natural shots - especially 4 and 5. Started the flight last night in GW3 (FS9) and was half-way before I went to bed. I'm off to Wagga in about ten minutes (6:50 AM here now) so will finish the flight tonight.
It is very beautiful......must be awesome in reality.
Cheers! Bruce

I'll be looking forward to seeing how your flight turns out. I've been thinking about the details for the next leg. I'm also monitoring the weather in hopes that my next leg will be in more visable weather so I can enjoy some sight seeing. I intend to stay with my plan to fly this whole route in real weather, so I may not get such a window, but that's part of the adventure of the flight.

Kevin, I'm too tired tonight......didn't get back from the Wagga trip until 4:00 as I took a different route home - and one along which I have a dozen photos to display at some time. So I'll have a break tonight, I think, and will meander further towards Juneau tomorrow. Have a good day over on your side (looks as if it's about 1:10 AM in Arizona....8:10 PM here). Regards, Bruce

Regards, Bruce Like you said, there's no need to hurry. Sounds like you had a good trip. Digital cameras are a lot of fun, aren't they? When I was in Prescott last Saturday, I found a Field Guide on mine and got it. I've been reading through it and have even discovered stuff I didn't know I could do with it. As someone who used to use film SLRs, I reallly like having everything in one little package instead of having to lug around 20lbs of equipment everywhere. ;D

Kevin, I've finished the flight and it was a bit of a hair-raiser at the end.....almost zero visibility! My ISP is having a problem at the moment with the server that hosts customer's files so I can't upload the pix just yet. Shall do so as soon as they have solved the glitch. I flew the flight in three aircraft....started in the Tri-pacer and then, after downloading JBK's Avro 504, did a few miles in that then finally switched to his Orion update (lovely aircraft). Real-world weather certainly can be a bummer at times...as you'll see! Bruce

Real-world weather certainly can be a bummer at times...as you'll see! Bruce I'll be looking forward to your pictures. I was having some problems with my ISP not to long ago, so I know how that feels. Turned out that the first guy who installed the modem (which works kind of like a cell phone and sits in a box on my roof) had installed the box that contained the modem wrongly and water had leaked in. Since they replaced it and installed it properly it has been working good. I'm certainly learning that about real weather, which I didn't use very much until I was on broadband. Though I used to set up bad weather from time to time to practice in it, with real world weather enabled, it's much more realistic as the weather is completely out of my control.

I'll be looking forward to your pictures. .... Here we go...... The Tri-pacer (in the genuine Aussie livery that Slide did) ready to leave. Late afternoon and note that the weather is fine and clear. Leaving the runway and heading up the fjord. Cripes! This is a big place! Now heading up the "top" channel and back towards the sea. Note the fog/clouds ahead. Also note that I've magically changed aircraft in mid-air! (Jens' updated Orion). I don't like the look of this stuff. I made three approaches and was considering aborting and flying to another location. On this approach I held my breath and came in all over the place, but managed to put her down. Snow and sleet and fog and I actually took all of the runway and a bit more to stop and turn around. I'm not leaving here until the weather is considerably improved! Bruce

Great pictures, Bruce. The weather seems to be quite severe at your landing. Reminds me of a landing I made at Bella Bella about a month ago, .... At least you didn't have trees growing at the end of the runway approach!! ;D looks as if X-Plane is a little more sensible when it comes to plopping auto-gen down. Bruce

Bruce That flight I made a month ago was in FS9, but I just realized that it was the other Bella Bella airport that I had landed at, at that time. That airport is just a little west of the one that you and I landed at on this flight. That must be the reason the trees were different. Trees blocking the end of the runway can be pretty difficult even in good weather let alone in fog like you were flying in.
