This airport has an interesting history. It opened in 1915 by two sisters and their brother as the Stinson Flying School and was expanded to include a large field for student practice. The name was changed in 1927 for a short time to Winburn Field in honor of a local reporter killed in an airplane crash. It was just a year later when a company called Texas Air Transport (precursor to American Airlines) used the airport for commercial air operations. The arrival of scheduled air transportation signaled a new era. Braniff and Eastern Airlines soon were offering service at Stinson as well. In 1936, the city of San Antonio renamed the airport Stinson Municipal Airport in honor of the Stinson family. The original air terminal is still standing and in use today! Here's an old aerial view of the field. You can see the terminal in the middle between the two groups of hangers.
