shift + Z does it for me, I think that's the default mapping too.

Thanks, shift + Z, of course, how many years have I been using that? Geez.
Anyway, reading these forums I notice everyone turning the frame rate slider off. Well hear is a lessened learned. There is no off tick, so I just set the slider all the way to the left. If you're not laughing yet, don't do that. It locks your frame rate to 10. If you don't want to set frame rate at all then move the slider all the way to the right. Unlimited.
Now let's see what FSX can do.

The FSX Tweak Guide suggest that locking your target frame rate may cause lower then expected rates or even stuttering. This has not been my experience so far.
I know every box is different but here's what I find. Setting the target to unlimited still presents a fair amount of stuttering even though my FPS can be quite high. High but with wild fluctuations as explained in the Tweak Guide.
Setting, locking, my Target Frame Rate to 27 has remove these fluctuations and any sign of stutter. This has done wonders for me even under normal graphics settings. I suggest all who are new to FSX try setting the Target Frame Rate to unlimited and after awhile locking it in. Then decide which is best for you before you dumb down the graphics unnecessarily.

I found that setting my frame rate at unlimited in FS9 could be helpful but the opposite in FSX. I keep it locked at 24. (and I never look at it!)

Yes, Flying is a pleasure now and frame rate is a forgotten topic. I'm convince MS has put some intelligence in this frame rate target lock which is responsible for FSX great performance.

If I'm not mistaken, locking your framerates in FS9 and FSX frees up system resources for other aspects of the sim, anything above a certain FPS is simply wasted. Setting your FPS while it works for some has the same result for me: wild fluctuations with lots of stuttering. But setting it at 25 ensures a steady, stutter free 25 fps most of the time and if it drops below (complex aircraft or major cities) I know setting it to unlimited would only make things work. This is for FSX. In FS9 I found that 35 fps is the magic number for me
