Aug 12, 1770 - The name Lizard Island was given to it by Captain Cook when he passed it on 12 August 1770. He commented, "The only land Animals we saw here were Lizards, and these seem'd to be pretty Plenty, which occasioned my naming the Island Lizard Island."Lizard Island is one of the most exclusive (and, of course, expensive!) resort islands in the world. www.lizardisland.com.au/How long did you stay, Kevin? Thanks for the information and the link, Bruce. I had wondered about the island. When I did that flight, I didn't stay there for too long. It was really just a short stop to have a break and some lunch on my way to Cairns. Here's a shot over Cairns from later that day (in this shot I was on final, but the airport is off out of the picture;)

Aaaah......tropical Cairns. My niece and her husband and two children live in Cairns. They run a glass lead-lighting business and are qualified dive instructors. Nice place to visit in winter but too darned hot & humid for me at any other time. Regards, Bruce
