The Golden Age Simulations' Travel Air Mystery Ship is close to being released, so here are previews of some of the variants and the scenery that is included: R614K was hung on the back of a Wright J-6-9 Whirlwind and won the type's first success (Cleveland NAR 1929) R482N & R482N "400" were two variants flown by Jimmy Doolittle and Jim Haizlip on behalf of the Shell Oil Company, the 400 being fitted with a modified 400hp J-9 together with some detail improvements to the airframe. NR1313 was a long distance version for the Texaco Oil Company (there is also a second colour scheme for this aircraft in the package) R613K, the other prototype, was initially powered by a Chevrolair D-6 aircooled inline engine which "proved to need further development" (as they say) and after it's failure at the Cleveland races, where R614K was so successful, the engine was removed (see below). It's a pretty bird, but if you push your luck, this is what you can expect! However, R613K was later re-engined with a Whirlwind J-6-7 and then belonged for some time to Pancho Barnes - and if you don't know about her "Happy Bottom Riding Club" then SHAME ON YOU! (ho, ho, ho) www.air-racing-history.com/PILOTS/Pancho%20Barnes.htmen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pancho_Barneswww.youtube.com/watch?v=pRTaa7sTOzIwww.militarymuseum.org/Barnes.htmlI'm not a "racer" but this set of aeroplanes does inspire me to try a fast run around the pylons........ GOOD FUN Leyland
