Okay you smart folks. Received this today from my daughter...........so...........What is it? BTW....I blotted out the brand name at the bottom to perhaps discourage "google" searches. (smile) Cheers, Just in case someone is asking. The item is setting on top of my paper shredder. (smile)

Hmmm......no takers?
Okay....a hint perhaps?
I would venture to say you all have one of these around the house. I know I have about 2 or 3 others.............this one is just different. (smile)

My guess is that it's a torch (flashlight) sitting in a charger base. There is what looks like a switch in the face of the thing....there appears to be an up and a down arrow on the switch. Is that a pink lens at the top? My second guess is that it's an ancient Egyptian fertility symbol.

My second guess is that it's an ancient Egyptian fertility symbol. That's Funny!!! Okay.....doesn't look like there will be any more takers so here's the answer. It's an electric wine opener. (Corkscrew) Yep.....I had never heard of such a thing....but my daughter claims they work really well. I'll let you know later as we're having Lasagna tonight and the daughter provided a couple bottles of wine with the opener. Cheers,

Used my new "toy" with dinner this evening to open a bottle of my favorite Shiraz...................Wonderful!!! Worked as advertised and was so very simple!!!
I think I'll have and use this new tool nicely!!

Interesting, Steve. I don't think that too many of those devices would be sold down here....
I have not used a corkscrew to open a bottle of wine for maybe a couple of years. Corks were phased out here some time ago and all wine bottles now have screw-tops. SO much more convenient and the wine tastes exactly the same....and there's no fear of corkage due to the cork drying out or failing to seal properly.

Corks were phased out here some time ago and all wine bottles now have screw-tops. Now isn't that odd......Australian wines here in the states All have corks.....in fact....the only wines that don't are very cheap and considered "not too good" wines. (smile) Isn't that strange how something as simple as a cork varies from country to country!! For what it's worth......a screw top cap on a good wine would sure make things a lot simpler!! (smile) Cheers,

The reasons no wine in Aus has corks is because (a) it doesn't stay in the bottle long enough to make having a cork worthwhile and (b) takes too long to get at it with a cork Roger PS need to be a subscriber to read the article, Bruce PPS I forgot (c) you can get at it with just your bare hands when you've forgotten where you put the friggin' corkscrew

What the.... I seriously cannot believe you guys that you should need an electric tool to open a ruddy bottle of wine - this is not the way to use the world's energy resources IMO. How much effort does it take? Here's a shot of my more than 50 years old sommelier tool that I've had and used since the early 1970s. It has everything you need to do the job and quite honestly takes less time to do the job than that dozey bird in the YouTube video. So to open the odd bottle of wine you keep an ugly plastic device standing collecting dust and using electricity. You must be bonkers. And meanwhile half of the Third World doesn't even have access to a reliable electricity supply. Sorry, I do feel quite strongly about this. Roger PS many years ago there used to be a product called the Teasmade. It consisted of an electric teapot connected to an alarm clock and you used to stand it beside your bed and be awoken to a cup of tea. It took twice as long to fill up and clean afterwards as getting up and making a pot of tea did. It was a non-product, just like the electric wine bottle opener.

I've seen, and used, a device for removing corks which is like a hypodermic syringe - you poke the needle through the cork, give a push on the small plunger and Hey Presto!, out pops the cork! It pumps a small amount of air into the bottle between cork and wine and the pressure is enough in that space to slide the cork out. Not used with sparkling wines, of course!

I did mention that this was a gift right? (smile) I agree Roger....not something I'd run right out and purchase.....especially since I really don't drink that much wine around here. (Perhaps two or three bottles per year)
However, it did work pretty slick. Some of the wines over here use the synthetic corks these days......sometimes those can be a bugger to get out. (smile)
