Even though I said that I never would again, when my disk drive crashed and I lost everything on my PC a few months ago, I've reinstalled FSX. I'm now running with an AMD octacore CPU that I've mildly overclocked to 4.2 GHz, with 8 GB of memory and having just upgraded to a Nvidia GTX950 graphics card, I couldn't resist reinstalling the sim. And I'm mightily (and pleasantly) surprised. I've got all of the sliders over to the right and I'm getting a steady 20 FPS (which is all I've set it for) and it's running brilliantly, like I've never had it before.
I'm now realising that all those years ago (5 is it?) we were very hard on Aces and complaining about what a rubbish program FSX was, maybe a bit too hard. I now think that part of the problem was that they developed and were running it on machines with very fast, powerful processors and we mere mortals (or most of us anyway) didn't have and couldn't afford anything like the specs that they had. But now, as always happens with PCs, we're getting bigger and bigger bangs for fewer and fewer bucks and we ordinary folk are catching up to where they were then and getting the kind of results that they were intending. It's just that it's taken a while for it to happen.
I immediately downloaded and installed the freeware Orbx North American and European sceneries which I think are superb and look and perform fantastically on my rig and now I'll have to spend a few evenings seeing what other goodies are now around that I might fancy. I've still got an awful lot to install but have lost quite a bit of stuff that I doubt I'll be able to replace, but too bad, I should have backed it up (actually, I did have a DriveImage XML backup with FSX on it but for some reason it seems to have corrupted itself and is unusable even though, annoyingly, all the folders and files are visible in it). At least it'll give me something to do with my spare time when the long winter evenings begin to draw in, eh.

Good on you, Roger!
One of the delights of holding onto slightly older software is that the hardware required to run it at maximum becomes cheaper as time passes. Since building this PC (about a year ago) and then upgrading the video card (late last year) I can fully enjoy things like Open Rails, TS2016, Project Cars, Silent Hunter 4 and others.

So true Bruce, so after all the stick we gave it in the beginning, FSX just keeps on giving. I've not seen anything yet (although I've not been looking very hard) that says that the FSX graphics have been improved on in the new sim and as the aircraft and sceneries that are now available for FSX leave nothing much to be desired really, I can't see how the new one will break into the market without significantly improved graphics with greater 'realism', whatever that is. But it's not for me to say - I suppose we're not the target market now being old farts who've been around since floppy disks were the best thing since sliced bread

......- I suppose we're not the target market now being old farts who've been around since floppy disks were the best thing since sliced bread You've hit the nail firmly and correctly right on the head, Roger. That fact can be confirmed very, very easily: go to the Steam site and just browse some of the categories or, if you already have a Steam account, let it take you through your daily list of so-called "recommendations". Plenty of anime rubbish with sexual overtones, plenty of blood & gore, plenty of horror and LOTS of zombie-killing!

Morning Vin, yup, I've still got mine next to my computer except mine's the boring old black plastic case version. I had it installed and working up until I lost my hard drive and I'm wondering whether it'll be worth reinstalling as if I'm going to get the most out of FSX, that'll need quite a bit of time downloading and setting everything up. Hope you're keeping well my old friend and managing to keep warding off the advances of all those rich old widow-ladies Roger

Ahh..yes... I too still have all my old Flight-sim stuff. Every copy since FS3....plus a lot of other items such as the old Sub-Logic IFR & VFR Scenery disks....plus stuff from a company called Mallard, I think? Anyway...still packed away in boxes. Why I've kept all that I have no idea as much of it is on the old 5 1/4 floppies.
Cheers!

Amazing! I have a 42" Panasonic digital TV and I've always known that in theory I could connect it to my PC using an HDMI connection. Well, earlier on as my FSX is sooo smooth with my new graphics card compared to what I had before, I did just that and did a short flight in my downloaded Savannah. I have to say that it was stunning and if I'd been using pedals instead of just my old Cyborg 3D Force joystick, with the enormous screen just in front of me on my desk, the scale was almost the same as the real thing. I've also found that when you download the Orbyx freeware world airports, they also generously provide you with their full scenery library which includes a massive amount of fantastic stuff, including all of their animated people, animals and objects plus tons of beautiful static aircraft and scenery objects, all of which you can load into ADE. As a result, I couldn't resist wasting a day yesterday and making my own version of one of our local airfields, LFDS Sarlat-Domme, using stock objects plus animations that passes pretty well for the real thing. I've also just downloaded Gmax as I can't find a stock building that looks anything like the Sarlat aeroclub's so intend to make my own, and if I'm not careful I'll find myself back in scenery design again Roger
