I apologize already as I know this is going to be a long post....but, I am finally up and running in MSFS 2020 in VR and will NEVER go back to 2D again.
This trip started July 2023....heard a lot of talk about MSFS 2020 and VR, so dug out my old Oculus Rift goggles and gave it a go. I was AMAZED at how beautiful and immersive Flight Sim was with VR, however, my old computer and goggles were less than a desirable setup. My frame rates were terrible...but there was enough there where I knew this was the way I wanted to go.
So...that being said, I spent about a week researching and found my "Dream Computer"and got it place on order...I then started taking a look at VR goggles; i.e., reviews, recommendations etc. The pair that caught my eye was advertised as the "Worlds Smallest VR Goggles." Big Screen Beyond. Several reviews on YouTube were amazing and I decided to give them a go. I placed my order and while this was a startup company, they advertised shipping during the 4th Qtr. 2023. (My order date was Aug. 3rd) Sadly, delay after delay transpired, and my goggles were finally ready on Dec 15th....however, I had also ordered prescription lens and there was a problem with their Quality Control etc. Once that was all sorted out....I finally received my package in Feb. 2024....(can't remember exact date)...but 6 months after I placed my order.
Much to my disappointment, the goggles were not what I expected....first off....the lenses smudged very easily....however, to BSB's credit....most of that was my fault as I was trying to wear the goggles too far up on my head. I finally got that sorted (somewhat....still had to be careful when placing the goggles on).....but the "Sweetspot" thru the goggles didn't seem to match up very well.
During the ordering / delivery process of Big Screen Beyond, they do a face scan via an I-phone and custom make a face plate to fit. That sounded well at the time...and it did fit pretty well...but I found it a little uncomfortable at first. Communicating with their Customer Service, it was determined my IPD (Inner Pupillary Distance) was perhaps off. My order came with a IPD of 62mm....as luck would have it, I had an annual eye exam which my Doc., confirmed my IPD (or PD) was 61mm. Providing BSB this information, they provided me with instructions and pre-paid postage to return my headset back to them and they would send another....they recommended a 60mm PD.
Big Screen Beyond headquarters is about a two hour drive from my home....so mailing the package one day, they received the following, however, I hadn't received any confirmation etc., and was beginning to get worried when I finally received an e-mail informing me they had received my order and would process it soon....be watching for another e-mail to conduct the face scan via I-Phone.
WHAT? It was like I had just placed a brand new order for goggles. Well...impatient me....AND now having almost 9 months into this ordeal, I contacted Big Screen Beyond and requested my money back....something they advertise on their website. A couple back and forth e-mails with them apologizing for the delays etc., and "Promising" they would have my new goggles to me in a few weeks....I decided enough was enough and requested the refund.
With all that said....I do believe Big Screen Beyond is a pretty good company....but the long delays.....taking sometimes a week or so to get a return e-mail to a question..., I do believe they are just overwhelmed as a new company trying to get all the pieces to fit neatly into the box. I truly do wish them the best of luck.
Anyway....I ended up placing an order for a MetaQuest 3 VR goggles and a few accessories...ended up spending about half the cost of the Big Screen Beyond.....received the goggles 3 days after I ordered them, and got everything up and running this morning. Needless to say, I'm very happy with the new setup.
All in all...this has been a challenge...but I'm extremely happy with the MetaQuest...they are VERY comfortable....they are made such that I can wear my prescription eyeglasses under the goggles... and I think the quality of the display is as nice perhaps as the Big Screen Beyond, (hard to honestly say since I didn't have the correct PD to begin with).....but the MetaQuest will work nicely.
If you haven't tried VR goggles, I encourage you to give it a try perhaps....but be forewarned......it will ruin you from ever going back to 2D flying. (smile)
Cheers,
