I hate to seem dumb, but I guess that comes with being a "newbe" to the scenery game I have FS Genesis (NE) installed as well as Free Flow NE. Should I remove those before I create my airfields or should I work around them

No a dumb question at all The issue with designing airfields with specific addon scenery in place is that it may not work properly if someone does not have that addon. It can work the other way round, of course in that the addon interferes with the placing of airport scenery using the default scenery. I have seen this especially on seaplane bases when the addon changes the costline. I am developing all my airports using the default GW3 mesh, landclass etc etc. That way at least it should be fine out of the box. In the past I have created alternatives for different add on situations but in truth that can be a real pain. Since I am effectively removing the existing runways, airport polygons, scenery objects etc and completely replacing them there is less danger of enging up with runways though buildings or roads crossing runways - if you seewhat I mean ;D Dunno if that helps

Another thing to consider is, generally if you are building on the airport mat (background) it will be ok as far as mesh goes. BUT if you are adding eye candy in the airport vicinity, different mesh will handle it differently. Also with mesh added some default airports will be on plateaus or deep in valleys.
As for FFNE, since I fly in the bangor area and the default water is pure (or maybe impure) fantasy, I wouldn't leave home without it. Land airports should be ok, but seaplane bases will be high and dry in many places. The actual shoreline of Pushaw Pond for example is closer to the default in FS2002 than the default in FS9/GW3
In the end, you should make your scenery for yourself and if some of those you share it with can use and enjoy it, that's a bonus. In any case YOU will have it.

I added those two for similar reasons Tom. I found that FS9 was hard to fly VFR in around here because nothing looked the same to me from the air as it did in real life. After adding those 2 things, at least I can find the lakes and rivers that I was used to seeing from the air My initial attempt is going be to modify an existing airport (KLCI in Laconia NH), if that helps answer the question.

Laconia should look fine for everyone I think.

I have FS Genesis (NE) installed as well as Free Flow NE. Should I remove those before I create my airfields or should I work around them If you remove them and build your airfield without them, the airfield will work for people who don't have them - but it might not work for you!
Don't remove them and don't "work around them." Build your scenery to work with the mesh and water you have. It will work for anyone else who uses the same mesh and water, and it might or might not work for others. If it doesn't, they can make the required mods, and they might learn something in the process.
Unless your scenery is going to be payware. Then you'll want it to work for the majority of users, and that probably means no mesh or corrected water.
