...I have to wonder where this (FsX) takes us with regard to hardware cost for a new, but slightly improved sim (water reflections), that requires the Fs9 lanclass, 3 days of tweaking and for many of us, as Az said, a lot of money to upgrade our hardware to get the same (if we're lucky!) frame rates as we've presently got in Fs9/GW3.
All the Bill Lyons aircraft have problems in FsX and it's highly unlikely that Bill will upgrade them for FsX. There will not be a Bill Lyons GW4 so for me, why go further? If I'd not been so involved with forums in 2003, chances are I'd have stayed with Fs2002 so I could fly all those Cfs2 planes and Fs2002 craft that couldn't make the transition to Fs2004. Not to mention the better terrain resolution that Fs2002 still has over Fs2004 and the greatly superior beaches(that don't look as if they've been cut-out with pinking shears) and water textures to die for (never surpassed in Fs2004!).
I'm not convinced that water reflections and frame rate hogging autogen and road traffic are worth the (for me) £1100 I'd need to spend simply to sample the patches that private individuals will offer to make FsX feel like a slightly better Fs2004.
I think I'll build a pc that will give me all I want from Fs2004/GW3 and also run Fs2002 with all those great Cfs2 and Fs2002 models that never made the grade to Fs2004.

Those thoughts are about the same as mine Roger, though I did buy a nice box for the beta test. Funny thing is the RTM version is buggier and runs worse than beta 3 did. I can get 20 fps if I turn off feature after feature and make it look like a crappy, poorly textured FS9 with no landclass. I have it installed and I have been tinkering but now everyone says Vista & DX10. I'm not going there so I guess there is no hope for me. I just reinstalled FS2002 and I have to agree with you about how good it was. Better in all those ways you mentioned, plus the lakes and ponds in Maine were more accurate in FS2002 than in FS9. Maybe it's time to "Just say NO!"

Don't know how they missed the boat with the landclass in FSX....

Guys...... it appears I've come to pretty much the same conclusion. My old box I have is pushing the envelope to run all the additions, tweaks, add-on's etc., etc. for FS9... however, almost every flight I have to sit back and think... MAN... This is some pretty great stuff. Especially remembering the old FS3 days too many moons ago.
Bottom line.... I pretty much decided I'm staying with FS9 for the long haul. There's enough area's I still have yet to explore.... and way too many GREAT Aircraft I love flying for me to make the switch.
My only hope.............. That everyone else jumps to FSX so maybe some of the payware sites will discount all the FS9 stuff that doesn't work in FSX so I can find some great bargins. (Big Grin)
Best wishes, Steve

I understand your point of view. I have my FSX dvds here (wich costs me the half price because I have some credit in the local games shop, only 40 euro), and I'm not gonna install\try it untill I finish some projects in the way, so untill Xmas.
For the first time in my pc gamer life, I don't feel the urge to install a new game. The same day I bought the new Tomb Raider, and tried at once (Xbox).
Well, after reading simmers reactions in different forums (european and not) I've found opinions are more or less like the ones we read here, and everybody is listening to themselves saying "10 fps is good...6 fps is good...4 fps is good...oh well, it's not SO BAD after all..." just when you notice you bought a second hand car and it stops in the middle of the highway. But, it was the same when Fs9 come out the factory. I am not impressed at the pics I see here and there (my GE -not Pro, btw- looks much better), may be that's holding my hand, or may be I'm still too busy with my current FS9 projects. But I'll give it a try at the end, and see for myself what' s it all about. I can always uninstall (if I'm lucky), knowing FSX is a game designed for a more powerful pc than mine, developed with a technology I don't have (Vista and DX10). Only then, the real thing will show all its "power". At least, I hope so. I think Microsoft had decided not to get too much involved in developping some aspects of the game knowing the payware market will offer better solutions (meshes, landclasses, etc).
A little curiosity: I visit a forum in spanish were people still flyes FS2002...and they ask if it's worth to go to FS2004. It's not a joke nor irony, it's true. And yesterday, at Flightsim, there were NEW files for FS98. Almost each day new files for Fs98 and FS2002 appears. We, those who visit the usual neighborhood, we are always ready to discover the last new addons and get them the same day they are ready to download, planes and sceneries and utilities of all kind, payware or freeware, well, those who still have FS2002 or Fs98, remembered me that I have the choice, and not the market. So, I'll let the taste of the "newness" pass by my side this time.
FSX? ok, you can seat and wait for the moment.

What's the old saying? "Hell hath no fury like a lover scorned" Not when I weigh the cost that MS wants me to put forth for these things, no. Not when I weigh in the the cost that I have already put in. I have been a promoter of MS products in some rather hostile environments, but the latest news out of Redmond these days is beyond incredible. Cheers Shad

Let's keep the focus on FSX guys. I know Microsoft is the company we love to hate but their other and many failings would be better discussed in the Pilot's Grill.

We must remember that the open architecture of the MS sims allowed such add-ons as GW3. I'm not happy with the cost to run FsX but that doesn't mean I'm unhappy with MS in general. Blimey I've played all their sims far too much over the last 7 years to denegrate them all ;D
