It got me thinking about how every now and then Microsoft releases a version of FS that is loaded with great new ideas but it is largely unplayable in its release form. People fight with and about it for far too long and then the next version comes out and all those things have fallen together and a masterpiece is born.
I remember when Microsoft's last fiasco was released (FS2000) Even more people than now hated it. Lots of developers quit and some never came back. I think I only made 3 airports for FS2000 and that was after nearly 100 for FS98. BUT the new ideas in FS2000 are what in the end made FS2002 so good.
Just like the new ideas in FS5/5.1/95 (that suppurating pustule.) We joke today about one end of Microsoft not knowing what the other is doing but imagine back then... Windows was revolutionizing personal computing and the FS Developers released a piece of crap that would not run under windows. It was so bad they released FS5.1 on CD (at full price!) which was marginally better but would only run on certain hardware and still would not run under windows. They finally got it to work under Windows with FS95 (5.2) but it was still a mediocre sim with lots of unrealized features. BUT all that crap in the end was what made FS98 great.
Every now and then they stumble but the recovery (maybe FS11) is glorious.
