The 300-mile flight from Ottawa was completed in ideal conditions and the pride of British aeronautics landed at La Guardia this morning under sunny skies. Flying above New York harbour, the Statue of Liberty can be seen below the port wing of the giant aircraft. The largest passenger aeroplane in the world dwarfs the 4-engined Douglas DC-6. Bruce

What was the main airport for New York in the early 1950's? Was it La Guardia? Newark? Idlewild?
I chose La Guardia because it came to mind first.

Thanks, Royce. I'd better get this machine over there, quick smart! (Fancy landing at the wrong airport! Bill Pegg will never live this down!) Bruce

I haven't heard that name in years - Idlewild! Brings back memories. I didn't know it was the major New York airport at that time either, but apparently so. La Guardia is the oldest. Interesting history as noted in the short link. I've gone through both - went through the infamous TWA terminal back in the '70s - seems it's been retired, but being kept as a 'show' piece. Classic architecture that it is of that era! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_F._Kennedy_International_AirportAnyway, good to see you in New York, Bruce. I'm somewhere between deserts - somewhere . . . Dan …it’s great being a kid again – without the glue! ;D

Thanks, Dan. Those deserts are yet to come for this big bird...we are now on our way to Vancouver. I like the names "La Guardia" and "Idlewild".........very evocative of the 50's and 60's for me with plenty of references in movies and books. And that TWA terminal.....fabulous! I'm glad it's been kept for posterity. Regards, Bruce

Wow - the DC-6 looks so small behind the Brabazon - impressive! Saw a DC-6 recently ... that was not a really small plane... Have a nice flight to Vancouver. Wonder if you will be able to enjoy the "Indian Summer" from 20.000 ft? Nice shots, Bruce - thanks for sharing!
