I didn't take a picture of it; but my son and I made a small wind tunnel for his school science project this year. It had a square test section made from the box that 12 cans of Coke come in. We then fabricated a transistion piece to go from the round fan opening to the square test section. Next, we made an airfoil and flat plate out of cardstock, and mounted them on a wire post, using a coffee stirrer so it could move up and down. We then hooked a couple of springs out of fountain pens onto a wire sticking out from the side of the airfoil through the hand hold slot in the top (mounted sideways), so we could lift against something. Finally, we taped threads to the airfoil and flat plate surfaces to act as tufts so we could watch the airfloat. We then mounted each horizontally, measured the deflection of the spring; and increased the angle up to about 25 degrees. We pretty much saw what we expected - a roughly bell shaped curve, where the lift increased up to the max angle of attack, then fell off as the airfoil stalled, with the flat plate producing only a fraction of the lift from the airfoil. Our mechanism wasn't smooth in moving, and we had some choking of the airflow at high angles of attack because the test section wasn't big enough; but we pretty much saw what we expected. He unfortunately did not do as well as he could have because the accompaning report he wrote wasn't up to snuff. But, it was a fun project, and both his instructor and his fellow students were impressed. Next year's project is a homemade pop-pop boat. As long as we are "stuck" with each other, his projects will be in the engineering sciences, something we both enjoy. -James

Damian, is that a fair dinkum photo or a "photoshop" job? Something about it just looks........odd.

It's real Bruce; the only photoshop done here was to make the pics it smaller than the original to fit our current forum rules of 1024x800.

Well, in that case it's an impressive photo. Very nice. Bruce

The plane looks to big for the size of the tunnel inlet . . . and the people look real tiny! Dan …it’s great being a kid again – without the glue! ;D

For the yanks out there, the Mustang suffered a similar "treatment":

. . . . and the people look real tiny! ... That was exactly what I thought, Dan. I was eyeballing the cockpit/standing person relationship and thought that either that Bf109 is larger than life or those two men have shrunk. What is the source of these images, Damian? Bruce

Show me it is a fake and you'll gain one point of "credibility" in my book ;D I didn't say it was fake . . . just doesn't look comparatively correct dimensionally (plane vs tunnel) . Original Photo www.wwiivehicles.com/germany/aircraft/fighters/messerschmitt-bf-109.aspLangley Wind Tunnel Photo (same era) [a href=" "] [/a] Plus, the people are a lot bigger . . . Dan P.S. Photo looks to be real, Bruce - but still looks odd. …it’s great being a kid again – without the glue! ;D

I actually thought the picture looked about right to me..... I took the guy from the bottom left and copied him....then moved him next to the cockpit for a better perspective. Here's the result. Cheers,

Hi SGTMJ! never thought about doing that, but you got the point. Good idea (and definitive) "proof" (like Poirot said "tres bien mon ami")
About other "simulators":
As far as I know there are other type of simulator: what about the water "tunnels" to test ships? and earthquake emulators to test new buildings? I see if I can gather some good pics, of course a bit off topic but still a veryteresting subject. I visit one day a place where "fire" test were conducted, so it was a sort of "fire simulator". Do you know of any other "sim" not listed here?
