Finally I Will ask the Big Question....HOW DO YOU FLY A COPTER IN FS??? From its inception of Simming,my experiences with that INFERNAL machine has been frustrating..so I choose not to Fly the thing!..Not That I did not try,but realized the Basic Controls for realistic Flight,For Me,were not there....now I do not want the Simple, ARCADE feeling ,Yet Would like to Fly the Great models......any FS TIPS will be appreciated,to "DRIVE" this thing..thanx..Vin!..

Set realism to it's lowest (easiest) level. Make sure your rudder and alerons are not set for auto coordinated turns.

And then you try the Bell 206. First time, it goes in all directions, except the one you want it to go to. At least that was happing to me. ;D I then started to read about it, slider up to 'realistic' and things got worse. So I quit flying the heli's. But then, a few month later I thought, who's in charge here, the heli or me? I then started looking for 'beginnerchoppers', easy to fly, maybe less realistic, just to get the hang of it. And I found some models, easier to handle according to my experience. Maybe experts will say, you never learn to fly a heli the 'hard' way if you start like this, but it did help me. I can take off now, hover a bit, flying is no problem. And I started landing on an airfield. Anywhere within the fence. And then narrowing to the spot where you should land a heli. I use the Saitek X52 Pro, heli's are very hard to fly with the keyboard only, almost impossible. (Like a helipilot told me ones, get yourself a plate from the kitchen, put a marble in the middle and then start walking. The marble should stay in the middle of the plate. Now that's helicopter flying!) Very futuristic is the HeggII. It's a model from Kevin Bryan (Unreal Aviation) and you can find it on Hovercontrol. Click here to downloadA wonderfull little aircraft and very stable. Back in history, the Kamov KA-10M, by Shawn Lund and Pete Clayson. Click here to downloadAgain, a beauty to practice heliflying! And landable on water! And then, when you feel more confident, you can try a Bell 47. This exceptional model is made by Jean-Marie Mermaz. Click here to downloadA very nice model with very realistic animations! I practice on Juneau Intl. (Holger's Glacier Bay), there are a lot of H-landingspots. Theo (By the way, if you're going to fly the Bell 47, take care of the 'mixture adjustment screws'! Click! )

Thanx....helpful..Nice Pics,Will Play with these!..However,while our Flight controls for planes,are fairly reasonable,they are not representative of a copters controls.......a Yoke,rudder pedals,throttle....Just is not correct .Yes of course with practice ,one can learn to juggle,walk a tight rope,swallow swords,..anything!...But for realism sake ,My Ch Yoke and Pedals are a poor excuse for Copter flying....Like the guy said...try centering a marble on a plate while walking!.....I was thinking the unthinkable,for entertainment sake,and to use the great models...,an Arcade type control....Just Driving the thing,...but Purists will Howl!..Do not blame them,would not want Plane controls like that...SOO! back to CRASH and BURN..For Funs sake...NOT!!.....CHEERS fstheo, Vin ;D www.fsstation.com/tutorials/helicopter-flying-tutorial.html

Using a yoke also makes it harder to fly helicopters, a good old joystick is recommended; along with cranking down the realism settings. -James

Yes James ,and that's the rub,Ditto for the guy with just a key board ,a yoke,no pedals,....for serous Copter flying ,one has to think and learn how Copters work! ya need the right stuff,and a simulator to reflect it!.....Some years ago I did taste flying the thing...and in retrospect ,the real thing seemed to make sense more so than a Sim...I think real world pilots understand the basics!..then again I had a nervous Copter pilot buddy next to me!! NERVOUS!!. ;D....Meanwhile its beyond my control as it CRASH'S AND BURN'S!.....Vin!

Vin;
One of my brothers flies helicopters in real life, and says that MSFS is terrible at simulating helicopters. He prefers X-plane instead.
They are hard enough to fly in the simulator; I wonder if they are any easier in real life.

Hi James..you have a good source for those questions...and already he is saying what we found out..THIS simulator is really not condusive to Helicopters!..gryocopters OK...even a feeble attempt with Harriers!.....but what the hey,for a relative few bucks ,and with planes ,its wonderful!.I gave up copters on the Sim from the beginning...does not mean some can not master it,and do! ..but not I.!!...check my Coast Guard Post...My last attempt!....best Copter Pilots I have seen are with the RC crowd!!....James, are there LUNAR LANDING sims??..vely Interesting!!...Vin ;D

James, are there LUNAR LANDING sims??..vely Interesting!!...Vin ;D www.flightsim.com/main/review/tbm.htmOnly available for FS2004; they have been working on a FSX version; but don't know where they stand. Been meaning to buy it; but haven't gotten around to it. -James

Hi ....it says..."Shifty flight model: some flight characteristics inherited from the helicopter. There was some talk on their forum of upgrading the flight model and fixing the helicopter residual effects, so I'll reserve the judgment on that one for now."....The price: At $60, one might argue that this is a rather expensive add-on. What the reviewer says the HELICOPTER QUALITY'S of FS9, are inherent in this thing...What does that tell us? ? Tells Me CRASH AND BURN on the MOON!......Hope in future Sims,attention is given to the Helicopters!...Thanx James..its fun!!...Vin!!

Thank You theo......if you and I gave ten guys a Violin,,nine could play us a tune,but only one could play like Itzhak Perlman !..I think yo got it right..the very sim itself,a suburb Airplane Sim,but with helicopters???..well it requires an other skill...as surly as a RC flyer with his controls,can fly the thing..Like you say "PRACTICE,PRACTICE"...and throw out preconceived procedures...use whats available.....Helicopter models in FSX are so darn beautiful......as far as the MOON??....I recall Neil Armstrong had to fly the thing the old fashion way to land...Experience,and Practice,and On The job Training!! Cheers to ya..have fun...Vin!!

One heli I could come close to controling was the dodosim Fl282 in FS9. I have not tried many heli's, but this one seemed a little better. As long as I keep moving forward, everything is ok. I have a twist grip flight stick, makes it easier to fly/control.

There is also a Mil-24 Hind model that I found was relatively easy to fly; it had wheels so you could taxi it on the ground to the runway, and take off like a normal aircraft.
