A gentleman's airplane if ever the was one. My dad was one of many who flew them across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans in the last two years of WWII, which I guess "makes their bones" as warbirds by any definition. He said he carried mostly troops and "stuff" into the war zones, and more often than not wounded soldiers home.
Somewhere in my gee-whiz files I have an article written by the late Don Downie relating his experiences flying DC-4s for Flying Tigers during the Korean War. He said they crammed 50 GIs into the cabin and included a picture of same. It did not look like a way I would have wanted to spend the 12 hour flight from Honolulu to the mainland ....
But flying is always much better than riding!
