FLIGHT, My First Impressions.
First of all, I didn't start this thread to be a flaming match, and I only want to express my opinions on this great simulator/game. So, let's keep this as civil as possible.
First Impressions:
After setting up, downloading, and installing Flight, I was overwhelmed by the pomp and circumstance of the introduction, and casting the user into flight without some sort of how things work in the program. I mean, come on, throwing someone new into Flight without any background in aviation or experience in Flight Simulator and having them navigate a tight course of lofted balloons is just too much. Even I had a hard time getting the hang of the controls in the Icon to accomplish the maneuvers, and I have been using FS since FSII. Alright, that said, let's move on to my impressions of the program as a whole.
Flight as Whole
My overall impression of this program is AWESOME! My first words were this runs great, and I hadn't taken the time yet to tweak the graphics and other options available. Even my joystick, that was already plugged into my rig, updated to full functionality without having to configure it afterwords. Note: my rig is four years old and is running one 7950 Nvidia videocard and duo-core CPU.
FSX, I was lucky to get 20 FPS with my sliders at 3/4 on average. With Flight I get 30 FPS with the selections at high on average, which is very similar to what I had set for FSX. The program is simple to tweak, and I believe even someone with a rig six years old and a good videocard could run this decent enough to enjoy the program.
The thing I found out right away is that Flight is very versatile. It can be an arcade game and still be a simulator. Or, for you hard core simulator enthusiasts, a simulator, just try the check lists once and see what I mean(key=Q). So, if one is intent on getting a first impression, and going with that as one's final over impression of Flight, then you are cheating yourself. Also, if you are looking for a duplicate of FS, then Flight is not for you, its a whole new program and experience from the ground up. As I said, Flight is very versatile, and the user makes the program what it is, and gets out of it only what the user puts into it.
Try to remember your first time ever running Flight Simulator. What a newb you were, ey? You couldn't even figure out how to make things work for you at the beginning until you dove into the manual and figured out how to make things work. Same goes for Flight, if you don't look into it a little deeper, than you won't get much out of it in regards to a simulator. The video Tom has presented is a good example of what can be had in Flight, although the sound may be a bit mixed wrong.
There are going to be you skeptics that won't spend a bit of time with Flight, and won't give it the benefit of doubt, and I respect you for your personal feelings, but you are not giving Flight or yourself a chance to get acquainted. Yep, I know, you don't want another flight simulator added to your rig, great, don't, but don't tear this one apart because you are unwilling to try it. I support Flight, and enjoy it tremendously, and I also know, from experience, things will develop that will guide MS to create Flight updates that will benefit us hard core simulator freaks. They will listen, just wait and see.
As far as add-ons goes, as long as they are as good quality as I have seen so far, and stay at an economical level in pricing, I won't have a big problem with add-ons. Even $50 for a high quality continental U.S. package wouldn't be bad.
So, in conclusion, Flight is what you make it. If you are not willing to spend some time with it, as you did with FS, then you really have no right adding your opinion to this thread. Get rid of your own personal blocks to Flight, and give it and yourself a chance to get to know each other.
Sorry for not going into great detail, but the thread name is My First Impressions
