I haven't been very lucky with joysticks. I had a Logitech Force Feedback joystick and loved it. Very supple and flexible with wonderful feedback. But, it seems they have a tendency to gum up the potentiometers. The solution is to take it apart and soak the pots in alcohol to clean them, but I never got around to it.
Then, I got a Saitek Force Feedback joystick. Not so great because it also had a very stiff spring in addition to the Force Feedback motor. It was unpleasant to fly with the spring, and the stick was defective anyway and would never center correctly. And, of course, I couldn't return it to the store because I got it in NY and live outside the country.
I have been flying with the mouse in Flight and really love it. It is so easy to control the airplane, much easier than with a joystick. The only disadvantages are the need to maintain continuous input (no centering of the control) and the cross hair that gets in the way of the view. Also, I couldn't do aerobatics easily without a stick.
So, I was thinking of getting another joystick, even though I already have 2 lying around. There was a Logitech model at the local supermarket for a good price and I got it a few days ago.
What a disaster! No Force Feedback of course since Flight doesn't support it, just a stiff spring. Yuck! And I have been using the mouse for so long that I couldn't control the airplane with a stick.
My landing at Whittier for the first Aerocache was terrible. It made me want to go back to the mouse and throw away the stick.
But, the next day, I persevered and have been making small inputs and smooth motions, so things are better now. Although I like the mouse better. ;D
The Aerocache was supposed to be the Petersburg Lake Trail, so here I am flying alongside it looking for the gold marker:
No Aerocache, and none at Petersburg Lake either:
I flew all around for a long time looking for it, until I realized that the name of the Aerocache was Reservoir. Fine, I flew to the Petersburg Reservoir and there it was!
Back to the airport for a landing.
My landing was better than before, but I wish I hadn't bought the joystick. On the other hand, no more cross hair, and now I can go back and do the aerobatic missions.
Best regards.
Luis
