I mentioned in the Grill that I'm moving my FSX over from Win 7 Home Premium 32 bit to Pro 64 bit. So far everything is going surprisingly well and I'm amazed at how much better my graphics are using the same card, a GTX 560, which is hardly top of the range these days. I've only set my FR to 30 at the moment and in the tests I've done, it's held up pretty well with all display settings hard right. And the sim is running very smoothly too. So far I've not added any extra scenery because although I can copy it over, I've got to edit the file path in the config file first - bit tricky because I had FSX in C:\FSX and now it's in C:\Program Files (x86)\FSX.
One of my main considerations was getting all my other software running in the 64 bit environment so I can eventually ditch the 32 bit and I've only got one - my accounts package that's very old - that I can't migrate. I've even got the screen video capture software I use - Openbroadcaster - working and the FSX videos I've captured in 64 bit are considerably better quality than I was getting before.
So all in all, so far it's a win-win situation, which is very pleasing for a change based on my previous FSX experience. I've got a GTX780 card waiting to slot in next that didn't play nicely before in 32 bit. I have a feeling that it will work well in 64 bit and am looking forward to trying it out soon.
So FSX is back to being fun again - goes to show, being a 'late-adopter' can be a good thing. It certainly works out a lot cheaper
