Okay....I've signed up too, Steve. See you on Mars! Excellent Bruce!!!! I'd sure like to go see the launch as Vandenberg AFB is not that far away.....(maybe 4 hours)......plus that is a great area to visit. I was just up in that area a couple weeks back on business. (Santa Maria, CA.) However, the Company always has our yearly meeting around that time of year......so......we'll see. It would be fun though. Anyway.........this will be the closest I'll ever get to space outside "Kerbal Space Program." (smile) Cheers,

Steve, is that the AFB that's down between LA and San Francisco? The rail line runs past it? If so, it is simulated in the Surfliner Route (freeware, v2) for MSTS.

Bruce.....that is the only AFB that I know of along the coast and yes.....it is about half way between LA & San Fran.
Between LA & Santa Barbara there is NAS Point Mugu and I "THINK" the rail line runs along there also......but that would be closer to LA than San Fran.
A little research today and it does appear that Vandenburg has "Public" viewing areas of the launch. That would be great to attend but probably won't happen. (smile) Besides.....with this publicity campaign of sending your name to Mars.....I'm guessing there will be at least a short spot on the local evening news.
Cheers,

Yes....that must be the one that's modelled in MSTS. I checked with Google Earth and verified it. I'd love to see a space launch, having been fascinated by same since I saw the first Sputnik as a light in the sky.

Me too Bruce.....in fact, my wife and I are thinking about trying to go to this launch.....won't be the same as the BIG Saturn V's....but should be exciting. I'll keep you updated as the time draws closer. The only bad thing.....my company usually has our Annual meeting about that time of year....so.......we'll see. BTW....Have you watched the movie "October Sky?" One of my favorite....true story and a "Must See" if you enjoy rockets. .....and yes.....I too remember standing outside and staring up at the night sky to see Sputnik....(smile) Cheers,

I can tell you exactly where I was standing and who I was with. It was the most amazing thing I had ever seen

I also remember when Telstar was launched in 1962; even though it wasn't used by Australia it was still a fascination for us....to think of being able to speak to an overseas location by satellite was amazing! Then the same year the Tornadoes came out with "Telstar" in commemoration - the only hit tune ever composed about a satellite. (I'm not including David Bowie's "Space Oddity"....that was about an astronaut. )

Little bit of trivia about October Sky that may interest some of us. In one scene the boys are standing near a railway track. (I am Anglo-Saxon and cannot bring myself to say 'railroad'!) As they are standing there a train goes by drawn by a large steam engine. The driver leans out and waves. The driver is a cameo from Orville Winston Link, who some of you may know was a photographer who specialised in photos of American steam rail, usually at night and illuminated by massive amounts of flashlights. Do some Googling of his images and be impressed. I have his book 'Steam, Steel and Stars' somewhere.

I have his book 'Steam, Steel and Stars' somewhere. Hello Nige......I looked up his book, "Steam, Steel and Stars" over at Amazon.....they wanted more than I was willing to pay, however, did find it "New" at E-Bay for $5.00.....$9 counting the shipping so placed the order. I haven't purchased much from e-bay in the past....I've been burnt about as much as I've done good, so we'll see. Anyway....thanks for the tip.....looks like a good book!!! Cheers,
