HOWEVER...........I'm very pleased to see Green Bay win. If I was a football fan........this would be my team!!

My daughter follows the Packers....she loves NFL, as do I. She (in Canberra) and I (here in Yamba) watched the Packers vs Cowboys game, texting to each other as the excitement mounted. She was at work (Dept. of Foreign Affairs). When the Packers won she apparently jumped up from her desk, cheered and clapped and then realised where she was...at work!! Fortunately she's a "boss", so was in her office at the time!! I am a Raiders fan. Enuff said.

Wonder how they'd do playing a real man's game like rugby with no girly helmets and padding... (ducks for cover) Many years ago (late 1980s), when I was working for Otis in Canberra, the company had a box at the sports-ground where the Canberra Raiders (R.League) played their home games. Part of the sponsorship deal was that we also got in to see Rugby Union and other games held there, so I was able to catch quite a few Brumbies matches. One year the city was visited by a two-team squad of American university footballers.....American football, that is, and they put on a demo session before one of the Raider's games...or it may have been at half-time. Can't remember exactly. Our box...open at the front that evening (sliding glass doors)...was right next to where a bunch of the Americans were sitting. I think they were "reserves" and support personnel and they spent the afternoon watching the Rugby League game. We could overhear their conversation and they were continually expressing amazement at how much punishment was dished out (and received) yet the players wore no virtually no protection.

Down here in Melbourne, Rugby and American Football are virtually unknown. The game here is Australian Rules, a sort of cross between Gaelic football and the Sack of Carthage. It is called Australian Rules, even though at first glance it doesn't appear to have any rules! Over the years there have been rule changes to prevent dangerous tackles and 'barging', that is,excessively violent collisions. There is also some debate about possible concussions. I see that in Britain there is some debate about concussion from 'heading' the ball in soccer. I think we are going to hear more in the future about sports injuries and how to prevent them.

Oddly enough, that's what we call Rugby! When I was still at school in England we played Rugby Union, whereas you play Rugby League. My wife, who is from Yorkshire and knows about these thing, tells me that one rugby code is a game for thugs, played by gentlemen, and the other is a game for gentlemen, played by thugs, but I can never remember which is which!

The effects of concussions in ANY Sport .be it falling of a race horse or a Hockey game..Becoming Epidemic here..the Big Money gained By all is cover for this tragic epidemic...young men Lives ruined..Some Places in the USA Many do not wear helmets.on Bikes .Those Injuries result in Death a Merciful death..Great stride In Protection..But after all a Body Can take so much..But a Neck and a Head So vulnerable to injury..Some Of These Guys close to 300Lbs at High Speed Collisions Result in serous injury. the Kids ,men so much bigger and Faster...Rules On the Foot Ball field Give the vulnerable Quarter back Some Protection..But in Big Games A Solid Hit To Him If He is disabled and then pay a small price ROUGHING THE PASSER 15 YARDS.PENALTY..Meanwhile The Guy is Carried Out Second String Replacement??YA WIN!! www.concussiontreatment.com/concussionfacts.html

But seriously... actually the rules for rugby have been, and are still being, tightened up for the reasons mentioned. There have been rules for some time in relation to tackling in the air (not allowed), 'spearing' ie picking up an opponent and dropping them on their head (not allowed and if you raise an opponent off the ground there are strict rules in place as to how you let them down again) and high tackles ie around the neck. New rules are just being introduced to define exactly how high you can tackle an opponent and it's expected that in the coming 6 Nations (early February - I can't wait) many penalties will arise unfortunately as players get used to them. There are strict rules now on concussion - if after a head hit even if the player doesn't lose consciousness, the pitch-side doctor thinks that it's necessary, the player has to go off for more detailed testing (sub allowed) and if kept off, he has to satisfy the medics after a minimum set period (forget how long - but several weeks) that he's fit to resume playing.
So things are being done as they should be, but as a rugby fan, I'd hate to see tradition go out of the window and players all dressed up in protective gear. After all, it's a physical sport, the players know that as do the spectators, and that's how it should be maintained, but it's right that measures should be taken to prevent avoidable injuries however caused, and especially if as a result of stupidity or irresponsibility. It's a game not a war.
BTW - can admin change the forum settings so if you make a change to a post eg inside 5 minutes to correct a spelling for example, that it's not shown as being an edit. Other forums do that so it should be possible on this one I reckon.

It's a game not a war...... One of the biggest changes in any sport was the introduction of helmets+face-guards in cricket. Strangely, it was a move which was initially treated with derision by some top-level players but has since proven to have been an absolutely spot-on ruling and when you think that cricketers were playing with leg pads, padded gloves and "boxes" for many decades, why helmets weren't introduced wa-a-a-y back is surprising.
