Hi, Just looking for some advice, I'm busy organising an upgrade and will need a new video card amongst other things (currently NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 with only 128MB on-board RAM). I had a feeling I had seen a thread in this forum, but can't find it now (mind's in need of an upgrade as well). So what's the flavour of the month for running flight sims? and how much on board RAM is affordable? Leyland

Spad0007,
As far as I know, all the files are 'decompressed' during the install . What the sim does when you first run it is create the various .cfg files. Whether there would be problems installing the 'update' before this is done I don't know.
A couple of suggestion for your friend:
If he purchased the sim recently, I believe it is already v9.1, so he would not need the 'update'. To check, start the sim, then start a flight, click on <Alt-to see the menu>->'Help'->'About'. The version will be shown in the 'about' dialog.
If he needs the 'update' make sure to place the 'fs91upd.exe' file in the main FS2004 folder before running it. Running it from outside the FS2004 folder causes problems.
If you could describe his 'troubles', it might be easier to determine if the cause relates to installation, or something else. Might save having to start the installation process over.

Add RAM Add RAM up to 2Gb with XP Afford what you may but ADD RAM!! I now have 1.5Gb DDR and see a difference from 1Gb. Video cards also helped I had a 5500,256 then 6200,256 and now 7600 gs 512 [Just this year]. Each upgrade helped some. New drivers in, Old, Out! The 91.43's are working ok on my system. Faster cpu might help the most! (2Gh AMD for mine) As the Sim is cpu intensive !. Raid drives help a bunch. Cost to much for me right now but I have FS_9 on D: By it's self. It helped some small amount. So i can have the sliders over to the right on FS_9 and FS_X is just Flyable at15fps. Flying low and slow. IFR I Follow Roads.

Thanks for the help SPAD,
I had asked the 'shop' for 2Gb RAM and an intel P4 dual core cpu of around 3.4 or so. Haven't finalised the graphics card yet because I'm not sure if my monitor (flat TFT) will accept these latest inputs. I got an email of info from an old business contact who is 'into' the latest technology. When I asked him what the latest thing in cards was (he's not a 'simmer'), he said:
"Current graphics cards go upto 768mb. The standard now is not a AGP slot but a PCIE (PCI express). As usual if you have a crappy old monitor you wont benefit from these cards using SUB D analogue connection as I think most of them have DVI interfaces. If you really want to push the "boat out" the latest technology is effectively Dual Graphics cards. Research ATI's CrossFire dual graphics or Nvidia SLi (Scalable Link Interface). Can work out expensive. I would suggest a visit to ATI and NVIDIA to get the low down."
Thought I would post this as it might be of general interest. Seems to me that I need a 'new anorak' as most of this is beyond my feeble intellect!

ATI's CrossFire As far as i Know you will need a crossfire motherboard to run one I helped build a 4 gpu sli system it was over 5,000$'s US it is fast but not that (5 grand fast) and I am going to stay low line and behind the latest and gratest for a while some of the agp cards have 16 pipe lines mine only 12 and i hope some one will keep making better agp cards. any way tom's hardware can answer questions about monitors anyway that is my 2 cents worth (pennys?)
