Weird things happening in FS virtual worlds.......
Last monday, I've "deactivated and deleted" some parts of the world in GW3 I don't fly at all (South America, Asia, Australia; Oceania). As result, now under the "Go to airports" section, I have 79 countries (against the 220 in my regular FS9 installation).
Well, when I went to FS9, guess what: I've only found 79 countries....like in GW3. I never uninstalled those sceneries in FS9. No panic, I went to the scenery config and saw all the 220 are still active.
Then I checked the scenery.cfg in both sims and they were right configured, so I deleted the scenery.cfg under "documents and settings...." the one where the fs9.cfg and fsgw3.cfg are active.
Ok, now, nothing happened. I still have that issue. The only way to solution: open the sim, go to the scenery configuration screen into the sim, click on accept, exit the sim, and reopen the sim again. And then, I can see "Wait a minute sir, we are working for you updating don't know what..." small window, and then I am able to see all my 220 countries.....
The weird thing is, when I go to GW3, now I have 220 countries...and no 79. Of course they are not active and they are not there, but I can see all of them in the Go to airports section. If want to solve this, again, I have to go to the scenery configuration screen, click accept, exit and reenter...and then I'll see 79 countries...in both sims, tho.
This is not a major issue, I can happily fly with no problem at all. but then, why is this happening?
Is there any other configuration or settings hidden somewhere into my pc that I am not able to discover?
Or is it just another mistery in the world of FS?

Hi Damian, The trouble is that although you can configure separate Fs.cfgs I don't think you can set up separate scenery.cfgs so one does for both I think. Buy a bigger drive ;D

What amazes me, is that during the first two or three days it worked fine. Well, you learn something new everyday.
Yes Roger, I was thinking about selling my liver...with FS9\GW3\FSx and other big programs, I really need to buy another driver! but then, who will want it? too much whisky inside...

I think what your seeing is that when you make changes to the Scenery Library, 'scenery.cfg' is not the only file modified.
While each install of the sim does maintain it's own 'scenery.cfg' file (in that sims root), there are several (shared) files located with the 'FS*.cfg' file(s).
'wxstationlist.BIN' and the '*.IDX' files (in the 'Facility' sub-folder) also get modified. My guess is that these are responsible for the listings in the 'change location' window, thus must be updated when you switch between sims with different scenery.cfg's affecting facilities.

Ok, are we seeing the light at the end of the tunnel? the facilities folder. The Aindex seems the one that tracks airports, but not sure enough yet.
I'm going to experiment with this folder, and see what it comes out.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit 0800 zulu:
I've discovered how to solve this issue, and made some interesting findings.
The next changes are always within the "Documents and settings.....\Microsoft\FS9" folder (and not under each main Sim folder)
1- The scenery.cfg is not necessary for the sim to operate; actually I deleted that file and nothing wrong happens. And no other was ever generated.
2- The folder "Facilities" is the one to change to show the right airport list. Now, I've done two backups of these Facilities folder, one for FS9 and the other for FSGW3. It's enough to move the right one before starting the sim.
How to create a new Facilities folder for FS9? start the sim and in the Scenery Screen click Accept. Exit FS9, reopen the sim, and it's done. Now your Facilities folder is updated with the FS9 data, and you can make a back up to save in another folder (I created one called Bakkups; make a copy of the fresh Facilites folder and rename it to someting like Facilities_FS9). Now you must create a new "Facilities" folder for GW3: do the same, open GW3, go to the Scenery screen, click accept, exit, reopen, wait until a new database is done, and now your Facilities folder is updated with the GW3 data. Copy and back up this one too (mine is called Facilities_GW3). When you wants to fly FS9, all you have to do is to copy\move the right folder (oh yes, renaming it to "Facilities") and overwrite the existing one.
I am not sure it will help others, but at least, if someone ever does the changes I did, here is the solution.
Bruce, even if I deleted Australia, I still have Sidney there....and I don't know why!
Thanks to all!

'1- The scenery.cfg is not necessary for the sim to operate...'
Just so there's no confusion:
Deleting the scenery.cfg file in "Documents and settings\.....\Microsoft\FS9" folder may not cause problems. I believe this is a backup or reference file. It is not the working file needed by the sim.
Deleting the scenery.cfg file in ....\Program Files\.......\<FS9>\ folder gives the error 'The Scenery.cfg file is damaged......Flight Simulator will now quit". This is the working file. Do not delete!!
Side note: at any time there are as many as 3 instances of scenery.cfg file in the ....\Program Files\.......\<FS9>\ main folder:
Oldscenery.cfg- a copy of the previous Scenery.cfg file. Scenery.cfg-current file. Newscenery.cfg-temp file to hold your changes to the scenery library until you restart the sim to update the scenery.cfg.
".....I still have Sidney there...."-removing Australia (and Sydney) only removes the facilities and 'custom' sceneries. The base mesh and textures remain.

You may not have deactivated/deleted the photoreal Sydney files

Damian, I don't mind if you get rid of Sydney...........I lived there long enough to become sick of it and it's only become worse over the past 20 years. Bruce

You may not have deactivated/deleted the photoreal Sydney files I did it for sure. But I also found why it is still there, In one of the GW3 updates there's an australian mod that goes into the ".FSGW3\Scenery\Base" folder called AU-LC-GW. But I'll not delete it, no harm at all.
