Ok, I must be dumb. But after all these years, I never installed the 9.1 patch. I readed about it and what it does, but I am not sure if I need it or not; one or two more bridges here and there are not fancy enough. Does it changes the way mesh is managed? I have mesh here and there. I have tweaked the cfg terrain entries. I never saw any kind of problem with sceneries or addons.
What benefits will I obtain if I install the patch?

Additional bridges ... for one thing ... can't remember what else

The first thing to check is if you need the patch. Depending on when you purchased you may already have 9.1. Once in the flight screen click Help>About and your ver. will be shown. There are 160 custom bridges and areas like London or NYC are definitely improved. Kansas...not so much Don't know that it changes the way mesh is handled but it raises the allowed level to LOD11/19m mesh (TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=21). Other benefits depend on whether you experience any of the problems that were fixed. The 2 main ones were reduced FPS over time returning to or remaining in areas with heavy autogen and seasonal CTD in some areas. Other less common errors that were fixed involved ATC, AI, multiplayer, weather, ac loading. So if you don't need the bridges I guess it's a matter of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. If you do update you may find that certain add-ons, (such as FSUIPC, Active Camera, alternate FS9.exe) will need to be updated. Dave

The biggest thing the patch fixed was the memory leak in the addon scenery\textures folder. Before the patch you could not put addon scenery in the addon scenery folder because the textures never unloaded and soon you were out of memory.

I went for the patch; it wasn't so painful as I thought, and had to replace the default weather.dll and sim.dll because I forgot I had another modified versions. Everyhing looks sharp! it's very good, I figure it does something with mesh too and yes, textures loading seems faster. No gain in fps but I'm more than happy with my usual 20\25 average. The only thing that is not working is Active camera, so I'll buy a newer version tomorrow; fsuipc instead works fine. Not sure about other non-essential addons (gauges, planes and scenery) so I'll check next week. My mountains never looked so good!

Thanks Dave, that made the trick.
After a few days of testing, the patch is making me very happy: it is a real improvement.
