If you downloaded the Catalyst Control Center + Driver, go to the CCC on the "All Setttings" page under 3D tab.
I use:
Anti-Aliasing- Temporal + 6X Anistrophic- High Quality AF + 16X Catalsyt AI- Check DISABLE *important* Mipmaps- High Quality Wait for Vert. Refresh- Off, unless app specifies Adaptive AA- Enable, Quality
Your card is equal to or better than mine so I know you can use those settings.
You'll like how it looks, smooth lines and nice mipmaps.

When I loaded it .. appearently, the drivers were in the Windows file ... so that took care of it. My system is a -slightly ..as I could afford it ... upgrade of the Dell Deminsion 2350 .. so not a powerful machine. It still uses the Celeron Porcessor .. but I uped it to a 2.99 ghz .. has a gig of RAM and now the new video card (well, new for me) /// would those drivers you mentioned above work in my machine??? Those settings loook unfamilar ... those aren't in FS9 are they?

Your machine should do fine, just be careful with the autogen settings. Here's a link to the Catalyst Control Center software for your card: ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/radeon-prer300-xp.htmlDownload that and install it. When ready, open the CCC and browse to the area I specified. There you will find all of the settings I listed. Here's a screenshot of my CCC, yours may have a different style but it should be organized the same way:

Great.. found the spot .. going to download it ... later this week ... also upgrading the OS from XP home to XP pro. Was going to even upgrade to a Pent. IV ... but the one that was compatible for this machine is hard to find.. did order it once but they sent the wrong one ...ended up putting in a 2.99 ghz celeron instead (that is all the shop had handy, where I took it to install it properly) the place were I had ordered the pent IV did accept the return and I recieved full credit for it .. which I thought was a very good business practice .. oh... where IS redlands Airport .. it is installed for testing ... but there was no read-me. I used to use an ATI Radeon 9500pro and I pretty much used the same settings as Kobbe, only I had the Anti-Aliasing set to 4 and the Anistrophic Filtering set to 4. The ATI card I used to use had only 124megs so with your 256megs you may not need to turn them down to that setting, but if you do find things running a bit slow try turning down AA and AF as they can be very demanding on a graphic card.

One more thing. I've noticed from your screenshots that you have your mip mapping set very low either in the CCC or FS9 itself. Go in to FS9 and in Display menu go to Hardware. Change Mip quality to something like 5 or higher. If it has any effect on the FPS, you'll probably find it's worth it.
