Was flying from Pangborn to PDX .. a very smooth and uneventful flight ... about 20 minutes out of Portland ... the program just quit .. no error message, no microsoft "sorry about that" .. nothing .. the computer just droped the program, as if it was just done flying .. whether I was or not. Any ideas??? With no message or indication of what might have happened. .. it is difficult to trace.

Hi Dale,
Not sure if this helps, but I've seen the same when my computer has gone into automatic update mode. Some programs 'pause' the sim and reduce it to the task bar (we're talking XP here) and others just close the sim, as you say, without a by-your-leave.
Microsoft's own updates are in the first category, the offenders seem to be anti-virus, firewall and ad-intrusion types of software.
If this turns out to be your problem, then I know of no cure (so if you find one, please pass it on!).
All part of life's rich tapestry (ho, ho ho).

you know that might be it .. When I had to restore this machine a few weeks ago .. the microsoft automatic updates are turn on ... although it tends to only update when I shut machine off ... I wonder??? Going to look at the microsoft website to figure out how to turn it off.

Microsoft's updates are loaded 'when it choses' but sometimes require a reboot, if it doesn't request a reboot (something in the settings?) it will activate the update next time you fire up, but the downloading process might have been half a day earlier!
The way I tracked this problem on my machine was to check the settings on various bits of security software, most of them have preset times (or when next you switch the machine on after that preset time). After I found two of these updates (on different software items) had preset times coinciding with two of these CTDs I changed them to manual updates and the problem didn't recur. Remembering to update is a chore (my memory is going fast, wonder if I can fit RAM in my head?) so I reinstated the schedules (for times I might not be doing anything much) and live with the occasional crash.

Dale- Did you install SP1 to FS9 on this latest install? What season were you in? There were a couple of problems (memory holes? corrupt textures?) in the PACNW that caused that to happen. I believe they were seasonal or at the change of seasons. The FS9 SP1 Update fixed them.

PC pilot has it on the cover CD. Microsoft connect has a link to it.

Well none of the suggestions worked. To save time, I decided to depart PDX .. had just cleared the runway and again the program dropped with no indication as to why. SO I have established KPDX as a "No Fly Zone" - no special scenery added to that area .. just weird.

Wow, that's a beauty!
Sorry about the red herring, Dale
Sounds like a recipe for a re-install (some sort of glitch in the scenery files).
I got sick of doing re-installs, so now I always have a 'clean' install copy (usually xFlight Simulator 9) somewhere on the hard drive. Then I can make another new copy from it (zFlight Simulator 9) and I can just copy over the addons (aircraft, gauges etc.) to the 'z' file and delete the original, then rename the 'z' copy to be the new active sim and still have the original backup copy - sounds complicated but it works and doesn't require rocket science!

That is almost a good idea .. I don't have the hard drive capacity to install it and leave it ... however I could load it .. into a temp directory then -- in this particular case -- and then copy over the files. I have installed and I I am not mistaking, when you mover the cursor over a particular airport, in addition to the airport information, it also identifies the file ... I could try just replace it. In the meantime, a "Quarantine" is in effect for KPDX .. which in a way is rather interesting.

Don't know if this will help Dale, but I had the same problem once myself. In my case it was always on a VOR-VOR flight from Sea-Tac to Boundary Bay, FS would always crash in exactly the same place along the flight route no matter what aircraft I was using. It turned out to be a clash between addon scenery, in my case between UT and 2 mesh's I had installed. If you recently added something and the crash's started happening afterwards you could always try removing it and see what happens.

The only add-on is for the Cascades and the Columbia river - both by Holdger -- using the FSNavigator, I have identified the .bgl as AP915150 ... although it appears all the scenery is there, I may replace it ... to the best of my knowledge it would be a default ... Interesting, this morning I flew into Portland-Hillsboro this morning with no problem.

Dale.... Funny you brought this up. (smile) I've had the same thing happen many times around the Portland area. (Usual route I fly is KPWT - KPDX)
I've worked around it somewhat although it periodically still happens. Whenever I fly in that area.... I make sure I have a fresh reboot... clear my memory of anything I'm not using..... and then set my weather to whatever I want manually; i.e., turn off automatic update. That seems to take care of the problem most of the time.
I do have the Portland Scenery installed from Flight Scenery and have a TON of extra aircraft so always figured it was something conflicting with the scenery...... now.... I'm not so sure.
Good luck and let me know if you figure it out.

Dale,
Have you checked to see if the CTD is seasonal? I recall that Oldtimer had a CTD around 4S2, in Holger's CRG scenery. Don't remember how far it's effect went toward Portland. Not sure which, but it was summer or fall.
I think the problem arose after a reinstall of FS9 over an old install he had moved into a new computer.
