In my trawling of the major sites for files for my site - I've come across many fs2002 aircraft that seem to work ok in fs9/gw3 accept for the 'missing prop' - is their any easy fix solution for getting missing props back or are they gone for ever?

I think it's most likely you are getting FSDS 1 planes. Unfortunately, no. There's no easy way to fix them, especially without the original source files... This is one of the reasons I decided to learn Gmax instead of FSDS. Gmax is harder, but what's going to happen when FS10 comes out next year?

Gmax is harder, but what's going to happen when FS10 comes out next year? Not to worry..... FSDS will still be alive and well (NDA kicking in) I didn't say anything....... Honest ;D ;D ;D Brian

What we need is for some effects wizard to produce a spinning prop effect that we can apply to any plane the way we add lights or smoke.
Kimber suggested this a while back in the Outhouse forum, but nobody's come forward to do the job.
Seems like it should be possible...
We'd still see no prop when the plane was parked, but a spinning prop when the engine was running would certainly be worth having.

My 2ยข, Any aircraft created with anything other than FSDS2 or GMax will not show the porp in FS9. There is no fix. RE: an effect, I have it on good authority that it is not possible as a practical solution. Far easier to build a new plane.

Time ago , there was a P51 , of Paul Rebuffat , if remember correct , build for CFS , with the propeller , but not one of the landing gears . Strange , as the new graphic engine read data for the rendering of the propeller in a different section of the file . If all animation of a old model works , is not a format of the file problem , is a position of the data . So , as with the SCASAM rebuilt of the mdl , discover the section read from the new engine , can help to rebuild a mdl file with this section moved in the correct position . Thus is my experience in format of CAD systems , were two version of the same program read or not some data only for formatting problems.

Let me clarify. Before FSDS2 and G-Max, there was no support for prop animations. It was done with a 3rd party program called Aircraft Animator OR by several wizards of design by hand modifying the code. The code worked in FS2002 but is not supported in the Microsoft SDK. It is non-standard, unrecognized code in FS9. The props will not show, and can not be made to show. Far better to lobby the various designers who frequernt this and other forums to build a new version of your favorite prop-less plane than to keep wishing for the props to work. They will not. The other alternative of course is to re-install FS2002 and enjoy all your old planes there.
