Hello, esteemed painters: I'm trying different things to use the bitmaps in the waco paintkit, but I'm having trouble getting my colors right. I'm in photoshop cs. Is it best to use the bitmaps as a layer on top of my color with a blend mode of 'darken'? I feel like there is something I am missing altogether. Well, thats obviously true in general , but I mean something about using the bitmaps I am missing altogether. Any advice from you folks would be greatly appreciated.

I use Paint Shop Pro 7 for our models when doing textures I use a different layer for the background color and add a layer as ai add a color or stripe. Whern I'm satisfied I merge all the layers. as I am unfamiliar with your software, I can't add much more than that.
I suggest going to Sim Outhouse I believe that they had a forum also dedicated to painting and someoen there may be of help

Hi attaway! You are always welcome here! I don't think it is a "program problem", Photoshop is my choice too and a very good program. I am using it for three years, and I am still learning new tricks! The Waco's paintkit don't have layered files, but only the bitmaps. If you want to paint the Waco, you'll have to add colors, markings and lines, as a new layer "over" the original bitmap, which is a sort of a guide only. It works the same with Paint Shop or any other paint program. Feel free to change the tone and contrast of the bitmap to your needs too (change the dark grey to light grey or almost plain white!) , and of apply it as a new layer by changing the intensity. Painting is always "try and essay"!

You were right, Windrunner. The 'try and essay' method finally worked. I finally got the color I wanted using 'hue and saturation' in the 'colorize' mode. Lets you dial in a base color very precisely by hue saturation and brightness values.
Ended up working directly on the template. I just couldn't get the control I wanted with layers.
I'll post the results tonight. She looks good.
And thanks, Windrunner, Spad54 and Tom.

Have you tried "Flood fill" on the layer? Mask off the area (magic wand or lasso work best for me, but I use Corel), select your colour, fill the mask using "Multiply" option.
That way you don't get black shadow, but the more correct dark colour.
Just another thought...
