Somewhere in my repainting attempts of Bill Lyons' Stinson the left (red) nav light has disappeared. When I use Bill's original aircraft the light is there, but when I use Dale DeLuca's repaints - no light. Is there a way to get it back? I'm using FSRepaint.
These are for my own edifcation (and education).
Thanks.

I don't "do" civilian aircraft, so my guess/info will be generic... *grin*
There are three ways to get a nav light... A) it's hard coded in the model to illuminate, B) it's an effect listed in the aircraft.cfg's [lights] section, C) it's just painted on & doesn't illuminate.
Generically speaking, a repaint and/or a repaint program shouldn't be able to kill a light in the case of A or B above (while we all know a file-save glitch can happen).
Also note that in the case of A above, you will not get the nav lights in a stock FSGW3 installation, as the FSGW3 installation pretty much nukes the innards of a file (halo.bmp) that most hard-coded nav lights need to illuminate.
Do the two repaints in question use the same model and/or aircraft.cfg? Assuming you mean illumination, even though a painted-on light would be closer to your question, my guess would be your problem lies in the aircraft.cfg [lights] section.

The light illuminates, I have just found out. But there is no "physical" light on the wing. Nor is there a white (rudder) light I don't think Bill incorporated one. I don't know.
The two repaints do use the same model and aircraft cfg.
Anyhoo, I can live with it the way it is.
Many thanks for your answer.

As far as I can guess: the "physical" red nav is painted somewhere. You may want to take a look at the original Bill Lyon's bitmaps to find where it is and paint it in your version.

Not really. Those repaints that are missing the nav light use .mod file from the ..\model.1\ folder. (model=1 in aircraft.cfg file)
It appears this was done to accommodate a different texture set, and is probably missing the nav light.

Many thanks for your answers and help. I'll see what this old retired cameraman can do by slowly working through the problem. I can live without the physical light but I would need the burning light for dusk and night time flying, which works.
Thanks again.

This is a bit complicated and I'm not equipped to tackle it, but originally Bill modeled the nav lights as part of the model. Later the model was modified to accomodate a 2 sided (non-mirrored) texture and as far as I can tell the nav light was not modeled in the new position. You can use a light effects line from another plane and by trial & error position it in the proper place.

I have also noticed that a number of aircraft do not have a white light on the aft edge of the rudder, and I finally found out why when I found a plane that did - the light doesn't move with the rudder! I guess that's why almost all a/c with tail position lights have them at the top of the rudder/vertical stab post.

As I said, I'm slowly working on the problem. So far I found that Bill had "turned off ' the rudder light in the aircraft/cfg. By turning it on it was placed at the tail wheel position. By trial and error I was able to place it on the rear of the rudder where it should be. However, it does not turn with the rudder. Now I'm OK with that.
However, now I get all three lights in FSGW3 only. More sleuthing to do.
Stay tuned.
