I decided I would try my hand a doing a repaint and it has been going pretty good until now. I am trying to add a color to the stabilizer of the P-47 below but I can't get the underlying texture to come through. I know I'm missing something here but I haven't been able to figure it out. Any and all suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, jogger

Hi Jogger, What paint tool are you using? Do you work with layers? Photoshop and Photopaint (Corel - which I use) do allow layers. If you want on layer to show through another, you "merge" the top layer. There's a drop down selection menu on the layer's (object's) properties - in Corel you double click the object's name in the docked windows. Merge options allow the layers below to show through. There are many forms of merge - add, subtract, multiply, divide and so on. My tip (there are many ways) is to paint your details on a white layer and use "multiply" as your merge and to put all the colour layers as solid objects at the botom of the stack. White does not change anything underneath. Merge can also be used on your paintbrushes and flood fills. There are some excellent tutorials around and I can recommend also: www.simmerspaintshop.com/forums

PS "Tarheel Hal" is available on Avsim too somewhere, so maybe a mail to the painter might help if you want to learn and need to ask him how he did it...

My best wishes jogger! and have fun. Chris explained it all clearly, and like he said, it all depends on your paint program. Layers is the easiest and fastest way of making skins.
Is that AH's P47?

Windrunner, it is Tom Kohler's P-47M that I found on Flightsim.com.
Cbris, I use Paint Shop Pro 7. I am also using layers, which I merge together when I move them back to the texture folder. But I have not used a white layer, I give that a try and also check out simmerspaintshop. And the only Tarheel Hal I found was one for CFS2. I'll check out AVSIM again.
Thanks,
jogger

Hi Jogger
Just checking...
You do use the multiply function on one layer before merging as explained by Chris, don't you ? and then after you process the texture with MWGraphics DXTbmp ?
Multiply will keep the black pixels and add them to your colored texture.

On of the problems I am having is that the base textures I am merging with are too dark. Right new I am trying different techniques to lighting the base textures.

Nice repaint Lifejogger, I ran across a picture of that same airplane and immediately recognized it because I saw it here. Which means you're doing a great job!
