Or close by, or visited recently? I'm looking for restaurant recommendations. Good value preferred, Not too expensive but not too seedy either. I haven't been there for 40 years and I suspect there may have been some changes

Tom, I was once based in SFO, however, It has been some time since I was last there, but SFO only has umpteen thousand good restaurants. In the city, you can choose from a myriad of ethnic cuisines, from the inexpensive to the, well, they accept credit cards. ;D Depending upon where you are staying, and if transportation is not a problem, then areas around the bay area are dotted with great and fun places, particularly if you get into the wine country. For Sunday brunch, I will recommend the Alta Vista in Sausalito. A short and fun trip across the bay, by Alcatraz on the ferry, and a short walk up the hill to the Alta Vista. Sit outside with a view of the bay and SFO. They have the best Eggs Benedict and Ramos Gin Fizzes known to man. In closing, there is no way you can avoid having a good time in the Bay area – period. Tell everybody I said hello. SD

Tom, I have been there in 1995/96, and remembering one restaurant very well. I am pretty sure its name was The Garlic Rose, located at North Beach, serving Italian cuisine. However, I can't find their web-page but found this: www.thestinkingrose.com/. Judged from the interior, its most likely the former Garlic Rose. Worth a try, if your relatives like the smell

SD said it all. I may add that when I was living there 10 years back there was a small restaurant in Tiburon just close to the yacht club with a wonderful patio. Nice food, nice view on the bay. Going to Tiburon which is North in Marin County is a delightful trip as you've to cross the bay with a ferry from SF ferry terminal. Splendid view on the GGB all along.

Most of the restaurants on Fishermans Wharf are good, Empress of China is excellent. Scomas in Sausalito is incredible.
