Beautiful sight, beautiful sound. Sometimes I feel very sorry for people who will go through their entire lives without experiencing the sights and sounds and smells of (a) a steam locomotive, (b) a radial-engined aircraft, (c) a Merlin-engined aircraft, (d) a Short flying boat taking off or landing and (e) a 1960's Ferrari F1 V12 engine. Sensory overload. Bruce

a. Many times b. In a Ford TriMotor, among others c. at an air show, piloted by Chuck Yeager d. No, missed this one. My only water takeoffs and landings were in Cessnas e. Not a Ferrari, but I've sat in the cockpit of a '63 Cooper and watched a 60- something Lotus do some laps.
The sounds and smells are great memories.

Unless they've swapped the engines, that particular plane has Wright 1820s rather than the Pratts. I can't believe he ran the starter that long; the limitation is 30 seconds.

I was expecting to hear a totally different sound for some reason.. Is there a possibility of creating a sound file for the DC-3 with this video? (a) a steam locomotive, (b) a radial-engined aircraft, (c) a Merlin-engined aircraft, (d) a Short flying boat taking off or landing and (e) a 1960's Ferrari F1 V12 engine. A) Do scale model steamers count? (the ones you sit on) ;D B) I think I just heard one, but that doesn't count as much as hearing it in person! C) Have no clue where to find one of those lol D) a short flying boat? Like the grumman? Actually I saw a Grumman Goose parked at an airport in Oregon and I was surprised at how tiny the thing was. E) Nope, never heard one of those...probably never will with the interest I have for cars.. ;D

a - steam locomotive in Carson City, NV (and another one when I was really young, too young for details b - Too many to count. Lived under the departure path at SFO in the 50s. The Stratocruisers would rattle my mom's dishes. c - Mustangs, Spitfires, and that Spanish built Bf-109 they used in the movie Battle of Brittian. d - Used to see a Short (actually I think there were two of them) at SFO in the 50s and 60, but never saw one turn a prop. One is currently on display at a museum on the Oakland airport. e - Ya got me there. The most exotic I've experienced was my brother's Daimler V-8. My favorite car sound was the tuned exhaust on my 356A Porsche - gone these 34 years I'm sorry to report.
The most stirring piston engine sound I've heard was made by a P-38 Lightning on a high speed low pass. Smoother and quieter than a Merlin, but throbbing with the aura of barely restrained brute force ....

The sound he's provided for the engine has the qualities you've just described. Bruce

I really want to see a DC-3 fly in person, I love them so much. Hopefully I can see Continental N25673 fly at the Wings Over Houston Airshow in october. I dont think she is performing but maybe I can see her arrive or depart
