MS left me a nice surprise in my mail box the other day, in the form of the ISO for RC1. In my review of Vista Beta, ( www.ascendant-online.net/en/reviews/windows/vista_beta2-00.php ) I was somewhat neutral in my position. There were things I liked and things I did not. Its been three of four months now since the Beta, and how does it stack up? Well, speed is up.. quit a bit actually. However those things I did not like, I still don't. Their so called Windows Defender is completely useless - this feature will be turned off by so many people because it is so darned annoying that its benifit becomes questionable). It also tells me that instead of fixing the underlying security flaws, all they did was put a bigger alarm bell on. Solves nothing. The biggest harm may not come from MS though, but the major vendors. I had trouble with my Logitech mouse, there are still no drivers for Wacom Tablets at all, the Creative drivers are badly broken, and Nvidia's only have half the feature set of their XP counterparts, with no ability to span multiple monitors in the Vid Driver, and the Nforce driver still poping up signature warnings. And MS thinks they will be shipping this to businesses in November? Maybe they will, but after this experience, I will not be buying Vista for at least two years (likely timing of their first major service pack), if at all. Not ready for Prime Time. Cheers Shad
