Is there some reason why the aluminum/metal aircraft textures are so much more realistic in GW3 verses the standard FS9 installation?
I first noticed this the other night while flying the DC3 for the first time in GW3 and didn't pay much attention other then the fact that they looked more polished and reflective around the engine cowlings, wings, etc.
Tonight I transferred the P-47 over and noticed immediately how much more brilliant, shiny, and polished the aluminum looks on the unpainted version - stunning really how real life-like they are - perfect! Seems the white/wash-out characteristics of aluminum in FS9 are totally gone in GW3.
I didn't post this in the builders' section since its not about designing anything - just interested in why the difference and what - if anything - I could change in the regular FS9 install to get the same result's. All the display settings, config file, etc. are the same in both installs.
Any information would be helpful - thanks.

I would *guess* that this would be because the sun, sky, clouds, and water are all Bill's modifications

Hi Dan, Make sure you have "Aircraft reflections" checked in your regular fs2004 installation. Best, Bill

Kofi, Steve - your both right - it is Bill's and Tom's magical transformations back in time . . .
After checking Bill's suggestion regarding "Aircraft Reflections" (they were checked), I then spent several hours tonight messing around with my FS9's main 'Texture' files compairing everything from different Suns, to Coronas, to I don't know what all - and - finally found what made the difference between Bill's aluminum and 'my' FS9 aluminum. It was the envmap.bmp file I was using in my FS9 install.
I'm not sure if it was the original FS9 envmap file or one I had put in over the past 2 years, but when I dropped in Bill's GW3 envmap - magically - I had 'real' new/old polished shiny aluminum!! Tested several planes and each looks great - still some bleachout effect on certain parts, but even real planes will bleach out in the sun depending on the viewing angle.
Thanks for your comments and suggestions!! One of these days I'm going to get some actual flying time in - instead of configuring - guess that's half the fun of FS -
